After the brief prologue, the real story begins. We learn of Mack going to the mailbox and receiving a letter stating he should return to the shack where is daughter was murdered. The piece of mail is also signed with the name "Papa." This confuses Mack because the only Papa he knows is the name that his wife, Nan uses for God. He is very angered by the note because he does not know who went it. At first, he believes this is a cruel joke or that it is a trap by the killer. He eventually decided that he will depart for the Shack

This section of the story in given the name "The Great Sadness." This section is a flash back and skims the story of how Mack lost his sweet and youngest daughter, Missy. Missy was abducted by a man notorious for the murder of many young little girls. Due to his target on little girls and his mark of leaving lady bugs at the sight of each attack, he was given the name "The Little-lady Killer." He is ;after notified of her whereabouts and they lead to a shack where all they hind is a young girls bloody dress owned by Missy. This part of the story is extremely hard to read as it feels so real to the reader and nearly brings you to tears. Missy was an innocent young girl and this killer makes you want to hate him even more.

In this section, the story goes back to real time and with Mack going up to the Shack in Oregon. This section is quite short because it only leads up to his return to the shack. He sends his family away to relatives so he can spend one on one time with "Papa." He also did not want them alone because he was afraid that the Killer could possibly be leading him away from his family. With the help of a friend, he gets in his friends car and heads to the Shack.

The Shack which is the low of the low for Mack is not what it seems to be. In the blink of an eye, Mack goes through the most magnificent transformation. He end sup spending time with three people. We are never told directly but these three people do stand for the trinity. The African American woman stands for God, the skinny man stands for Jesus, and the woman stands for the Holy Spirit. These three work through Mack to return him to happiness and a new relationship in God. He learns how God and evil live in the same world. This book comes to the conclusion by solving the question of "If God is real why do bad things happen?" This book is the keynote to explaining this and how he fixes them.

This book reveals God in a modern day life. It portrays a good meaning but finds a way to capture the audience by putting a tragic piece into it. This book some how makes you cry and feel happiness spread through your body. It can show the lowest of lows and how God grasps you and pulls you out if them. No matter how far gone you are, Jesus loves you. Mack seemed as if he was no longer useful or even worth living. Through his trip, he was shown his worth and that he is loved individually by God.

This book speaks to modern day life. As a reader, I also was faced with the question "why dp bad things happen if God can stop them?" This book has its own way of answering. I can hardly describe it. I suggest this book to anyone struggling through any life problem because it speaks and it feels as if it speaks to you. This book taught me that no matter how far I stray and how much things go wrong I am never forgotten and I am always loved by God.
