How does the problem affect wellbeing and haura? ( mental and emotional, physical, social relationships, spiritual )

Stress causes someone to change very much therefor affecting their four areas of wellbeing. The mental impacts of stress can leave someone feeling very emotionally drained, lacking self esteem and possibly anxious or depressed. This is very negative for their wellbeing as they can’t be happy when this is happening. All the impacts of stress on someone's physical wellbeing can be very damaging. Stress affects all of our biological systems such as the digestive system, circulatory system and nervous system and subsequently causes serious illnesses. With all the illness and not looking after their health the combination is very bad for someone's physical well being. The social part of the wellbeing is like the icing on the cake. With all the personal problems happening because of stress the interpersonal problems follow. Stressed people don’t have time for relationships and lose the ability to function appropriately in social situations. They end up feeling lonely and lose their support system when they need it most. Spiritually people affected by stress start feeling as if they have lost touch with their spiritual sides. They no longer have time for any spiritual practices and feel as if they aren’t good people because of their behaviour. Our bad actions mean that we lose sight of what our spirituality means. We lose the faith and importance of our connection to spirituality. We go against what our spirituality is. But on the flipside ones spirituality can also reverse the effects of stress and help someone regain control of their lives if they are dedicated enough. All of the effects of stress combine to lowering the wellbeing of the individual. Once stress starts to take over it is a downward spiral that can be really hard to get out of.

Long term effects on the individual (personal), friends and whanau (interpersonal) and the wider community (societal)

Stress has many long term effects on an individual's personal, interpersonal and societal parts of life. Prolonged stress causes a person's immune system to weaken so it can’t fight off illnesses. With a weak immune system your body gets very rundown and you can get sick. People suffering from stress for a long time are at risk of diseases such as heart disease and high blood pressure. Stress also causes other mental issues such as insomnia and anxiety/depression. Long periods of stress can drive people to find comfort in smoking, drinking and binge eating, paired with lack of exercise and care for the body these stress effects can cause someone to become very unhealthy and very sick. After a while the strain on relationships can start becoming to much from the stress and that can mean losing relationships and friendships which leaves the individual feeling very lonely when they need support the most. Stress can make a suffering individual lack all of their interpersonal skills such as communication. They are also more likely to cheat from their partners. They will also start pushing away remaining connections and start keeping to themselves. Stress can impact the wider community and economy. The health services will have strain put on them to help those with chronic stress. Stress leads to decreased productivity at work plus more industrial accidents. Clubs and societies are a large part of a community and they need people to run them. Say one person that organises one of those clubs pulls out because of stress it can devastate that club and everyone else involved as they may not be replaceable. This is all very damaging to the societal area of the individual.

Short term effects on the individual (personal), friends and whanau (interpersonal) and the wider community (societal)

When we feel stressed there are many immediate signals that we are under stress. Stress has many short term effects on not only the individual but their interpersonal and societal aspects. A racing heart, headache, trouble breathing and chest pain are just a few indications that we are feeling stressed in a situation. These short term effects will not have any long last effects on us as long as they are only over a short period of time. These feelings are all normal. When we feel stressed we have a tendency to take it out on those close to us such as our friends and whanau. Often we lash out and don’t control our frustrations which leaves our friends and family feeling annoyed. If this only happens a couple of times it is understandable. We are only human and sometimes we feel frustrated. Our interpersonal relationships should be able to handle these occasional outbursts. There aren’t many short term effects on the wider community with stress as short term effects of stress aren’t very drastic.

Stress is the way we respond to the feeling of pressure. It’s a fight or flight reaction. A certain amount of stress can be helpful and push us to our full potential. But too much pressure and stress can send us hurtling to the edge and possibly a breakdown. Stress differs from the individuals. Stress is a big problem because in our current lives there is so much pressure in all aspects and consequently lots of stress. Stress isn’t spoken of very seriously like it should be. We think that stress is normal and while a certain amount is the large amounts that many of us are experiencing isn’t manageable. We should be able to reach out and get help for our stress because if not managed stress can be very devastating on the individual.
