The word squamous is used to describe the appearance of the cell which is scale-like. Stratified squamous epithelium consists of multiple cells which are stacked in layers whose membrane is selectively permeable and provides protection against friction and microbial invasion(e.g. bacteria) and desiccation(i.e. deprived of moisture).

Stratified squamous epithelium contain columnar cuboidal cells which gradually flatten towards the surface.

This type of epithelium exist in two forms:
1. Keratinized stratified epithelium- found in outer dry surfaces of body such as the skin and nails.

2. Non-keratinized stratified epithelium- found on moist surface that will likely go through wear and tear, such as the mouth cavity, tongue, pharnyx and esophagus.

Here is a diagram showing the layers of stratified squamous epithelium.
