My great-grandparents and my Ancestors before me came from a small Pueblo called Cacas Grandes. My family was from the Tarahumara people, well known for their long-distance running. People from the town call it Pueblo Magico, and after visiting this summer, after many years of not returning, I understood why. I felt the magic that radiated off the land, and the connection I felt was like no other. Near the pueblo is an Archaeological site called Paquimé. This land played a key role in trade and cultural contacts between the Pueblo culture of the south-western United States and northern Mexico and the more advanced civilizations of Mesoamerica. The pottery in this Pueblo is very well-known and highlighted for its sturdy and strong clay from the mountains. Artist Juan Quezada is renowned for creating original pottery and employing traditional methods of the Tarahumara people in a natural manner. This summer, I was lucky enough to take a pottery class from the Quezada family.

Here lie my innermost personal thoughts on the experiences I've had with gentrification and displacement from my community in Los Angeles. The killing of our people and ICE kidnapping our grandmas and cousins. The longing for my home in Casas Grandes, Mexico, which, although I love, I don't belong there anymore.
