Scenario:

You are part of a project team in a medium sized marketing firm. The firm has a flat organizational structure, which means everyone, from junior employees to senior managers, works closely together. Your team is currently working on a high stakes marketing campaign for a major client, with a tight deadline.

However, the team has been facing a series of setbacks due to miscommunication and interpersonal issues. Tensions are rising, and productivity is falling. Here are the key facts:

Team Members:

Alice (Project Manager): She’s task oriented, highly organized, but tends to give vague instructions.

Brian (Creative Lead): Highly creative but struggles with time management and dislikes structured processes.

Cathy (Designer): Talented, but often feels overlooked in team meetings and doesn’t voice her opinions.

David (Analyst): Analytical, detail oriented, but can be overly critical of others' ideas, which leads to defensive reactions.

Please identify where the problem lies and propose a solution. (write the problem and the solution in the comments)

The problem with the scenario is the Lack of collaboration. For the example that shown in the scenario, Brian's resistance to structure and Cathy's feeling overlooked hinder team cohesion. The next problem is Alice's unclear instructions are lead to misunderstandings and delays. The last problem is David's critical nature is creating a negative work environment and stifling creativity.

So the solution for this is the team needs to schedule daily or weekly team meetings to discuss progress, address issues, and ensure everyone is on the same page or in the company group chat.

Not only that, the company can have some team-building activities. An organization team-building exercises or outings to foster positive relationships and improve morale. It also might help improve team member relationships and effective work.

Cheymane Abdourahman Bachir 22000657:

They basically all have issues to work as a team because of their lack of interpersonal skills. Some of them are not willing to voice themselves properly such as Cathy that doesn’t voice her opinions because she feels overlooked or even Alice that does not communicate properly by giving no instructions. Another issue is those that are hostile, such as David that gets defensive when someone has a rebuttal to his ideas or even Brian who is hostile to structures inside the organizations which are normallly the most important part of the organization because it helps to manage everyone at each level.

What this team needs a balance, and try to communicate with each by being open.

The primary issue seems to stem from a lack of effective communication and collaboration within the team. Alice's unclear communication style can lead to misunderstandings and inefficiencies. Brian's unstructured approach can hinder progress and create delays. Cathy's feeling of being overlooked can lead to a decrease in her engagement and contributions. David's critical nature can create a hostile environment and discourage teamwork. To address these issues, the team should implement Clear Communication Guidelines to track tasks, deadlines, and progress and Encourage team members to check in with each other regularly to clarify expectations and address concerns. Organize team-building activities to strengthen relationships and improve collaboration. Acknowledge and reward team members for their contributions.

Problem: The team's miscommunication and interpersonal issues stem from a combination of leadership style, unmet communication needs, and mismatched working styles. Alice’s vague instructions create confusion, Brian’s dislike for structure leads to missed deadlines, Cathy’s lack of participation prevents valuable input from being heard, and David’s critical nature causes defensiveness in others. These dynamics reduce productivity and increase tension within the team.

Solution: Alice, as the project manager, should focus on improving clarity in her communication by providing more detailed instructions and setting clear expectations. To address Brian’s time management issues, the team can introduce a flexible structure that balances creativity with deadlines, possibly through time-blocking or creative sprints. Cathy should be encouraged to share her ideas by fostering a more inclusive and open environment, where feedback is requested directly from quieter team members. David needs to be coached on offering constructive feedback that focuses on problem-solving rather than criticism. A short team-building exercise or regular check-ins may help rebuild trust and reduce tension.
