English language learners bring valuable assets and immense potential to school. The role of educators is to realize that potential in deep and accelerated ways. Each teacher must ensure the path to that development is paved with meaningful interactions to help students develop language skills, gain conceptual understanding, and learn academic content. Our students deserve no less.

I had a student start in my 5th grade class in Aug. speaking only a couple of words in English. By October, she was talking almost completely in English with her friends and trying all of her written work in English. By December, I had moved her to the highest group and recommended her for gifted testing. She was able to complete almost all of her work in English and was performing better than many of her classmates who were native English speakers. When talent is recognized and supported, the ELL students will thrive and excel.
