I used to carry the impression of old school discipline “imparted” from my teachers to my students. Now I think, preserving the dignity goes a longer way.

I used to think that discipline is going harsh on the students and making them learn through these failures but now I think there is more to just making them learn through failures. We need to connect before we can correct them.

That is going to be something complex, but it is something that I have observed colleagues practicing in school

One of the chapters that I felt was really useful was chapter 9- managing stress effectively. It acknowledged the challenges of discipline with dignity at a personal level.

I knew discipline work was tiring but I underestimated the challenge of balancing it with a newborn at home. By sharing this, I want to acknowledge that everyone in the team will have their own challenges and I would like to reassure you that we work as a team. :)

I used to think that students are still too young to discern values and teachers need to be the one to build character. Now, I realise that students perceiving their environment and forming perceptions and identity much earlier. Hence when teachers interact with them, and also discipline them, we also need to treat them as perceiving adults and give them the respect that is due.

I used to think books only contain theories that may not be practical/realistic to handle discipline.

Though I have not finished reading the book. There was a phase which I like in this book that resonate with me." Everytime we take something away from Student, we must replace it with something. (Page 54)

The author explained using this very relatable example. Say a person who keeps missing his shots at basketball, he is punished and not allowed to play anymore. Which is not helping the child

Students’ well-being must be considered when meting out disciplinary consequences hence discipline with dignity.

When we discipline with care, we will discipline with dignity.

Child’s learning is the focus of why we discipline

Learning is a process. Child may not learn immediately.

Patience is needed. Love is needed.

Used to think that punishment is the key to solve behavioural issues. Now I've learnt that students need to be taught about self-discipline and responsibility to understand the issues and prevent it from occuring again.

I used to think Discipline takes place when correcting misbehavior. But Chapter 5 highlights the Power of Prevention.

Ask: not really but glad that through our tip series, we have provided real-life examples

Give: i suggest for us to explore other authors/books, in time to come, not because the current book is not good but for us to learn from others.

The collaborative effort of the team is praiseworthy. I wonder if we can engage more of our teachers to practise Discipline With Dignity in their classrooms daily. I wonder if we can handhold some teachers ( at least initially to get them started ).
