In this story, the theme is shown through many different instances happening around their lives, " There was another riot downtown today...everyone yelling, 'Jews out! Jews out!'... even two people killed. The police just watched!" (Spiegelman, 37). This quote explains that since Nazi Germany started taking over Poland, Hitler's hate for the Jews is causing everyday people to become suspicious of people they used call friends or neighbors. because they became suspicious, they started being deceived into thinking jews were bad people.

Another way Spiegelman displays the theme in the book is when Vladek escapes from the war prison camp, " I approached to the train man, a pole...i still had on my army uniform, and I didn't let know I was jew" (Spiegelman, 64). this quote shows how people were lead to deception again from hitler's rule. Vladek had to fake his identity so that someone else wouldn't get him killed because he was a jew.

Spiegelman shows this theme in the story when Vladek was in the military fighting against germany. he states, "Why should I kill anyone?" (Spiegelman, 48). He says this because he was pretty much forced to join the war because hitler wanted to take control of everything and kick out all of the jews because he simply didn't like them.

Another way Spiegelman shows this theme is at another point in the war where he gets caught and is then blamed for starting the war, "It's all your fault, this war!" (Spiegelman, 51). this quote shows the theme Deception of differences can lead to war, by the Nazi just saying that. Vladek was forced to go into war by his country, and his country was forced to into war because Hitler made a lot of people believe that jews were actually really bad. when really, they were just normal people, but because he deceived people into believing otherwise, it started a whole bid, nasty war over someone's beliefs.
