I think the speaker feels that it is a constant up hill war for his freedom and respect, and he uses the bird as a prop almost to stimulate his pain from his loneliness. The bird is affected by its isolation in the cage by acting erratic and putting himself through pain to get out. The bird is denied his freedom.
