The environment fluctuates but most of the time it is high stress because of how urgent many cases can be. The environment depends on the cases which vary from just checking on patient's vitals to quickly acting when a patient is in an emergency. A typical work week is 36-40 hours because of the 24/7 aspect of the ICU. What sort of environment would you be responsible for working in? I would probably have regular shifts but I'd get called in as needed for major emergencies where there is not enough staff. It is mostly alone work but it can be group work if it is an emergency and the patient needs multiple tests with not enough time. The job is definitely emotionally stressful because there is a lot of uncertainty and scary moments. The part of ICU work is that emergencies very frightening but you need to keep calm and work fast while being as accurate as possible. It's not as physically demanding and it can be quite active depending on the situation.

Source: www.careeronestop.org
