OV: Many people argue that the main purpose of television should be to educate rather than to entertain as television is often the main vehicle of transmission of knowledge. To fulfill some noble aim because it is very accessible to all viewers to all ages and income groups.
Medium to transmit important information
R: However, entertainment should be an equally as important objective
to de-stress. could be embedded into educational programmes as it attracts more viewership for such programmes. This increases the exposure and awareness of educational topics shared on educational shows.
EG: SNL and Stephen colbert - political awareness and commentary through comedy.

OV: Shows should be purely educational so that they are not detrimental to the development of children OMA that the TV should focus on providing entertainment because there are other better ways to educate and educational tools out there (eg. books, schools, internet, YouTube)
R: Young children watch TV for long periods of time and hence TV shows targeting them should be educational (provision of knowledge -Sesame Street/Barney, language skills - HI-5, inculcating values/manners - Justice League/Ben 10) yet entertaining. Shows should also be both entertaining while being educational in order to entice and sustain the attention of viewers. For example, children watch upin and ipin/ sesame street as it is entertaining but simultaneously also has educational benefits. Children can learn basic or cognitive skills from the shows such as conversational malay in upin & ipin and counting or multiplication tables in Sesame Street

Television serves the equal purpose of education and entertainment. Despite the educational aspect of shows, it would only be possible for viewers to continue watching shows long-term if there is an equivalent portion of entertainment. An example would be "Bill Nye The Science Guy". It not only involves the aspect of science put into simpler terms, but it also includes humour and entertainment. Another example is "Family Fued".

Both not mutually exclusive as they are simultaneously educational and for entertainment purposes. Both education and entertainment are equally important as there is a demand for both. People of different ages and preferences want to watch different shows on the television. Television channels and show producers must accommodate to the various target audiences.
EG: Singapore local channels such as channel news Asia and channel 5 provide a huge variety of shows that are both educational (news) and entertaining (Japan Hour), reality game shows, cooking shows and travel shows
