Guided Reading 4/9/19
During this lesson, I had AJ read the first half of a story. Then I asked him a series of questions. After the questions, I gave him the rest of the story and then we went over the comprehension questions together. Finally, I had him write a story from the point of view of another character.

I had very positive experiences with family interactions! AJ's mom was very willing to share her concerns and what she felt he struggles with. She was always willing to talk with me for any length of time at the end of our sessions, and she took my suggestions seriously. I really feel that we worked together to come up with goals for AJ, and I am glad we accomplished those goals! Our main two goals were to give him comprehension strategies he could use on his reading tests at school, and expand his reading selection .

I completed cooperative reading (mentioned in Cooper on page 31) with AJ during our 5th session. The two main reasons I did this were because we did it a little bit in session 4 and he did really well so I wanted to focus more on it. Also, It was a great way to introduce some new literature to him. I was modeling reading fluently and we were exploring a new text together. Through my excitement about the text, AJ was also excited and became interested in a new book that was out of his comfort zone. I could also tell through this cooperative reading that his fluency is improving!

We completed sessions 4 & 5 in Pearson Park! While at first I found this to be a distraction, I took some advise from Dr. CKE and we ended up taking a short walk and reading some signs around us. At the end, I said to AJ "Did you even realize all the things you just read!? That's awesome!!" This made AJ feel really great about himself. We were both so happy after this experience, and we went back to a pavilion to begin exploring a new novel together!
School Zombies!

As I look forward to my own classroom next year in Maryland, I need to think about the meaningful time I was able to share with AJ and his mother. I learned a lot about myself by reading all of the creative things my classmates did!
For example, I learned that sometimes I'm NOT so creative, and I may need to draw inspiration from outside sources to ensure I'm keeping my students excited and engaged. There is nothing wrong with this as long as I acknowledge it and use this to my advantage instead of letting it hinder my students' reading lessons.
This project has given me insight into a struggling reader like I've never had before and now I believe I know more ways to expand my students' literacy horizons and teach them meaningful lessons.
