In todays lesson, i feel like i performed with good control and stamina. We learnt the first few exercises and learnt a few combos. We learnt these in groups then did corner work in solos going across the room. I was focusing on getting feed back, that i can apply throughout the next 6 weeks before my final assessment.

Positives...
In my opinion, i thought that my core control was to a high standard. i know this through balancing and feeling like I'm dividing my weight in the correct places. Lifting up out of my legs gave me the opportunity to move quick and not take time to transfer weight. I lifted up out of my hips pulling up which also helped with my posture throughout the lesson. Sinking into my hips can lead to heavy legs which can lead to lower legs and slower movements. I lift up from my hips using my core, to get that feeling i sometimes, i put my fist just inside my ribs and lift up and over my hand and that is the correct feeling i need throughout the exercises. This feeling also help you to not stick out your ribs when dancing which is easily done when breathing in. The feeling of your ribs closing is the correct feeling you need to perform with the right technique.

What i need to improve on...
I need to improve on wearing heels throughout the lesson. I have danced in heels before but, this will be the first time i dance in heels for technique class. This is something that i think will help me adjust my posture and will also make me use my feet more. When wearing heels you need to make sure that you go through the whole of the foot when landing or you will make a lot of noise and won't look as graceful or controlled. Making sure you use your feet the same way you would when wearing ballet shoes will help me to use the whole of my foot when dancing in heels. After todays lesson, i feel like i need to improve on my ankle strength and stability to make sure that i wont wobble or have shakey ankles when legs are getting tired. This will also help to prevent injuries at it is so easy to go over on your ankle, especially when you are tired and legs have worked hard.

In todays lesson, we finished learning all of the exercises expect the last combination that we will learn in next weeks lesson. We managed to get through all the exercises one by one from the corner and in small groups in the centre.

Positives...

What i need to improve on...
i need to improve on keeping my arms in second position when needed. I have a tendency of dropping my arms in second. This suggests that i need to use my upper body more instead of just focusing on my lower body. This sometimes effects my posture and makes my weight lean back which can knock me off balance. I need to make sure that my shoulders are pushed down into my shoulder blades. I need to make sure that my arms are within my peripheral vision.I need to focus on my upper body and had performance. This will then help me when turning or in pirouettes. Getting the right arm positions could be the difference between a single, double or triple pirouette. I will monitor this weakness next week using the mirrors and peers to assess me and judge to see if i have improved in this area.

In todays lesson, we reaped and performed all the exercises we learnt in week 1 and week 2. We did this without stopping, which tested our stamina and our movement memory. This gave the group enough time to learn half of the new combination. This combination was a mixture of our work that we are focusing on in technique class.

Positives...
In todays lesson, i thought that my posture was held correctly throughout the whole of the lesson. My core was held correctly which enabled me to perform certain movements with more control. For example, pirouettes and turns from the corner looked more controlled and gave me the balance i needed to perform them to a high standard. This also helps to avoid any injury and makes the risk of falling over smaller. Holding core muscles will help you protect you back, back injuries are mostly always from having the incorrect posture. I could really tell that i used my core throughout the lesson because my weight placement was also improved making me more lighter on my toes, allowing me to move faster. In my opinion, keeping your core held is one of the most important factors to remember when performing jazz in heels, as this helps to keep your weight in the correct place and helps to hold your balance.

What i need to improve on...
In todays lesson, i feel like i need to relax my neck. Throughout the lesson, i got picked up on the fact that i was making my neck look stiff. Which means that I'm holding tension in the wrong place. I need to also remember not to take the tension and put it in my hands. Holding tension in my hands always leads to having spikes fingers which isn't aesthetically pleasing. I need to relax my upper body and not not look stiff. To help me out with this next next week i need to loosen up and concentrate on relaxing more when dancing. I will be able to judge this by looking in the mirror and just over all feeling less tense and comfortable when dancing. This will also help to get a jazz style loosening up hips and shoulders.

In todays lesson, we started off class by warming up with all the exercises that we have performed for the past three weeks. After that we were all warm and ready to finish off the rest of the combination. We managed to finish this and perform it in small groups. This means that we have finished all of the technique class that we will be assessed in for week six.

Positives...
A positive that i think came out of todays lesson was the fact that i was confident with the final combination. By the end of the lesson i completed the combination with style and the correct technique. I used all my feed back from previous lessons and put that into the final combination. Because i was confident with the piece, i was able to add my style and make it more of a performance. I also feel like my flexility was pushed and i will hopefully be able to improve on this throughout the next up going weeks. Knowing the song, helped with my musicality and the dance was danced on certain beats which helped.

What i need to improve on...
I need to improve on landing in heels. When performing elevated moves i am landing heavy which makes a loud noise. I believe that this shows lack of control which means my core isn't held. To fix this problem i need to work through the whole of the foot when landing an elevated jump. I believe that this is because i am not experienced in dancing in heels. I need to make sure that i do more work in heels to mould them and make me feel more comfortable in heels. From this, i hope i feel more confident when dancing in heels and will be able to focus on light landings and more control.

In todays lesson, we performed all of the exercises as if we were in the assessment. We did this by performing the class as if we were in the assessment. The music played continuously, this really tested our stamina. We also got to know the little groups that we will be performing in for our assessment.

Positives...
Throughout the lesson, i feel like my core control was good. This also links with my balance, my weight placement was also helping me to control my balance and control. I made sure that my weight wasn't leaning back which is sometimes what i do, especially when performing pirouettes. I feel like my balance was helping me in kicks from the corner which got rid of my shaking ankles. Pulling up and using my core really proved to be that it makes anything easier, kicks and pirouettes being the main too components. I managed to perform more pirouettes and land them with control. In terms of kicks from the corner, with more control i was able to fourette my kicks in arabesque to a kick in front. Looking at the videos from past weeks i can really see an improvement, i look more controlled and stronger in heels.

What i need to improve on...
For my assessment i need to improve on keeping my shoulders down when dancing. For example, making sure my shoulders are pushed down when elevating, not lifting them with tension. I need to make sure i extend my neck and push my shoulders down when performing. But at the same time hold no tension in my neck. I will use the mirror to keep checking the upper body and adjust when needed. My body will then automatically change when I'm holding tension. I especially need to keep this in mind in my assessment when I'm slightly more tense.

In todays assessment, i thought that my flexibility was shown throughout the session. I really pushed myself and managed to pull through in box splits which was a massive achievement for myself. Kicks from the corner was also a chance to show off my flexibility. Using my core for control aloud me to throw my leg up and close without looking floppy or lack of control. The exercises have really helped me to improve on flexibility allowing my leg to hit over 90 degrees. My legs were turned out, straight with a pointed foot. Another positive was my turns from the corner. I feel like these were the best part of my assessment. I was able to spot turn at a good speed with control and not wobble or lose balance. I feel like this again links with posture and core strength. To improve , i feel like i still need to dance in heels more to make sure that I'm comfortable with landing elevated movements. My landings need improving and more control. To sort this out for the next assessment i will be practicing elevated movements and landing them until i have a soft control landing. I feel like the more i do this the more i will feel comfortable and all be able to work through my feet more. Another point that i could improve on, is holding my arms in second position. This is something that i have really been struggling with thought that technical lessons, especially with exercise number 2 and 17. When throwing my leg up high i contract slightly bringing my arms in and not holding my arms in the correct second position. What i need to do next time is to push my shoulder blades down and use my core to stabilise my arms. I could use the mirror to help me with this and also hold an exercise band in each hand pulling across my shoulders to make me more aware of the issue. Hopefully this will make me more comfortable and sort the issue out.

During this week, we managed to spend plenty of time on stage spacing the reconstruction on stage making sure that we were in the correct formations. Due to the performing space we had to make the formations slightly smaller, in the studio we used too much space. This did mean that we had to re stage the piece slightly. This added more pressure as a group to get the timing perfect or there could be an injury waiting to happen. After a few rehearsals i feel like we were all confident with perfect timing. Although, in the dress rehearsal i did actually go over on my ankle and unfortunately sprained it. This was something that knocked my confidence and did hold me back in terms of being overly cautious with elevation in heels. This didn't stop me from carrying on with the rest of the shows, although i do believe that i was never able to perform the piece with 100% confidence. I was really disapointed in myself for doing this as i was just starting to become confident in heels. Hopefully, i will become a lot more stronger in my next jazz performance.

In my opinion, after watching the final performances i was very disappointed with the outcome. The whole piece just didn't look polished and didn't portray a professional image at all. The timing was awful and as a group was completely out. Sections that were meant to be in unison weren't and the same for canon, it wasn't showing dancers in canon it looked messy and wasn't aesthetically pleasing for the eye. The first section started really well and the timing was perfect and looked sleek, but then as we started to get into the quicker choreography the timing went and you can clearly see the group just fall apart. To make sure that this doesn't happen again we need to spend more time and rehearse with counts not just with the music. Hopefully for the jazz piece we will all be able to work of the timing as i feel this was the biggest factor that let us down. Although, i do feel like we performed well in terms of projection and performance. When i look back at the body language and overall performance i feel like we all did well, showing confidence and professionalism. We all had our eye line raised looking out above the audience, this shows maturity and overall confidence in what we are doing. Because we all knew the choreography well, we were able to add style and performance. This is why we all rehearsed as much as possible so we are all confident and there is no need to worry about remembering choreography as we can rely on our movement memory.

In todays lesson, we were able to learn the first few exercises. These exercises are in heels for this technique assessment.

Positives...
During todays lesson i feel like i performed the first lot of exercises well with good posture. Throughout the exercises i was able to change my posture to whatever suited the exercises. For example, fossil walks i was able to add a slight twist at the shoulders to add more style and character. This made the exercises look so much more professional and more interesting to watch. I was able to do this throughout the whole lesson.

What i need to improve on...
I need to work on wearing heels and making sure that i hold my core, so i don't feel unstable when dancing in heels. I need to pull up and out of my heels creating a light feeling on the balls of my feet. For me to do this i need to use my core. I also believe that as the weeks go on i will be more used to the feeling and get more confident with it. I will also be more confident with the exercises, which will allow me to push myself further.

In todays lesson, we finished learning all of the new exercises and carried on getting corrections to improve.

Positives...
In todays lesson, i feel like i really pushed myself in terms of flexibility. When watching back the videos you can see that i am getting my legs above 90 degrees when i can with the correct technique. This made things a lot easier when dancing as i wasn't restricted in any movements. I was hitting the correct alignments getting the lines that are aesthetically pleasing. To keep this flexibility up i will keep stretching and pushing myself.

What i need to improve on...
I feel like in todays lesson i really let myself down in terms of being stiff and not letting my body relax in movements. When watching back the rehearsal videos i feel like my weight was way to far behind where it should be which did knock me off balance for some exercises. This suggests to me that my core wasn't held which also had a knock on affect in terms of balance. This also made the exercises look awkward and not aesthetically pleasing to watch. There was far too much tension in my upper body which didn't allow me to relax into the movements adding no style at all.

In todays lesson, we were able to go over the excises that we have learnt in previous weeks and learn the final sequence " Back to black".

Positives...
I feel like in todays lesson i did really well in terms of core strength . Now i have had 3 weeks of solid jazz technique in heels. I feel like i am really improving and getting a lot stronger when dancing in them. I dont feel like i am restricted at all to movements and they dont hold me back when performing the exercises. I am able to work through my feet when landing elevated jumps. My ankles feel a lot more stronger, which gives me a lot more confidence when dancing. The exercises that we have added on this week are focused on more fast moving, which tests my strength as for this you need to be on your toes to get all the movements in.

What i need to improve on...
My biggest fault for this week has to be my movement memory. I wasn't able to remember the exercises from the previous weeks they way i should be doing at this level. I really struggled to remember the sequences and at the pace they were set. This is something that will be improved for next week, i am going to rehearse all the exercises and apply all the corrections that were given to me throughout the previous lessons. i will be more confident going into next lesson so i can put more time into the style of the exercises instead of worrying about remembering.

In todays lesson, we went through all exercises, and were put in groups for the mock assessment next week.

Positives...
When looking over this week, i feel like i really understood the exercises and took on my task that i set myself in week 3. The hard work that i have put in since the last jazz class was worth it as i now feel so much more confident going into next week into the mock assessment. This allows me to enjoy the exercises more and add my own style on, instead of worrying about remembering the exercises. This always allows me to really focus on getting the correct technique.

What i need to improve on...
During this week, i feel like my core strength really let me down. I really need to work on weight placement which is effects my core stability. I have a tendency of leaning back then elevating. When watching back rehearsal videos i can clearly see in exercise 10 the kick combination my weight placement just wasn't where it needed to be at all, which completely knocked my balance and made me look very unstable. I need to make sure that my ribs are closed and all the tension is in my core. Also, allowing my pelvis to be in neutral will help my get the correct weight placement. I need to make sure that my weight isn't on the working leg.

In todays lesson, we performed a mock assessment, where we executed the exercises in front of a camera.

Positives
During todays mock assessment , i really feel confident and ready for the assessment next week. After watching the mock assessment back i am pleased with my performance and i clearly know what i need to improve on for the final assessment next week. This is something that i am proud of as i have been struggling with these exercises, but with hard work i feel like i have really worked hard and got where i need to be the week before the assessment.

What i need to improve on...
Throughout the mock assessment i feel like my stamina didn't stay at the same level throughout the whole lesson. i feel like when we performed elevated movements my stamina did drop. I think that i need to work on stamina when jumping. I did feel like in exercise 10, my legs weren't staying at the same height and did lower throughout the exercise. Also when rolling to the floor when leaping it took ,longer to stand up. This is something that i need to work on throughout the week before the assessment. I will be working on my breathing when dancing.

In todays Jazz technique assessment, i feel like i performed to my best ability. I couldn't fault the effort that i put into the technique assessment and lessons. Although, i do feel like there were factors that i could of improved on. For example, i felt like there was tension in my shoulders which made the exercises look uneasy and not aesthetically pleasing to watch. I need to make sure that all the tension is put into core not my shoulders as this will help my balance and stability a lot more. This also would effect the alignment and lines that i would make during the exercises. My upper body was out of alignment which did effect my pirouettes throughout the assessment, my weight was pushed back which didn't allow me to perform more than one and half pirouettes. I know i can do much better as i have proven this in rehearsals.
I do feel like my flexibility was used to my best ability as this made my movements a lot more easy to perform and looks easier to move through movements. This is something that i am constantly working on throughout my lessons and is something that i am able to show in my technique assessments. Wearing heels throughout the assessment was something that i have been struggling with, although i do feel like i have improved, but i still need to gain strength in my heels since rolling my ankle in them. The last few exercises where we performed in flat jazz shoes did show a larger improvement, and i felt a lot more confident. Something that i need to work on is pointing my feet in heels. Something so simple is yet so hard when wearing character shoes. This is something that just takes time to get used to as you cant see an arched foot, as you would in a jazz shoe.

What is jazz? - Week 7, 8, 9, 10, 11

Week7-
In todays lesson, we watched the clip of the dance and understood the style that we need to portray in the piece. Throughout this piece, there are sections where the dancers are split up into small groups. So we all took note of all the different groups. Our tutors put us into the start position, i was placed in the from triangle of 3. This meant that from that we had to change slightly the groups that we decided for it to make sense and be easier to dance the different section. We then learnt the first 20 seconds of the piece. After, todays session we realise that the piece is very technical and is going to take a lot of work and detail to perfect this piece. We are all ready to put in the hard work and effort and we understand to get this piece to the standard we want we need to put in extra hours and rehearse in our free time, as we have only got 5 lessons to learn and perfect it. The hardest part of splitting the group into small groups was the fact that the original dance had around 20 dancers, we only have 9 dancers. So making sure that we split the groups up evenly with the different sections was a struggle that we faced.

Week 8-
In todays lesson, we started off with a quick heel warn up so we wake our muscles up, making sure that the rehearsal is safe. To refresh our memory we rewatched the piece and recapped over the choreography that we had learnt in the previous week. We went through this as a group during the week so we were confident that we could go straight in and learn more choreography. After learning the next 30 seconds of the piece we were faced with the two different group sections. We went into the groups for around 30 minutes and learnt the sections. We finished the lesson off by adding the sections together. We knew that the choreography that we learnt so far was far from perfect but this is something that we need to perfect once learning more choreography. We also had to teach peers that weren't there last week the choreography that we learnt in the previous week. This was something that did his us back slightly, and isn't something that we want to be doing every week in this rehearsal process.

Week 9-
In todays lesson, we learnt a lot more choreography than we expected and planned to. We found that setting targets to get to really helped us set our work over the current weeks. We have reached a part of the dance where we are introduced to hats. this was something that as group we struggled with as we face a lot more details and theres more than just dance movements to think about. This took longer than we thought and was harder than we thought. We had to watch the youtube clip, finding the little details to make the hat section look unison and neat. We then had 30 minutes to work out the next trio section where we all learnt the short trio section. The little details that we needed to pay attention to were little things like eyeliner and gestures, these make the biggest of difference when on stage dancing in unison. This is the difference between an average and a professional piece.

Week 10-
During todays session, we really focused on the hat section, as when
we looked back at last weeks rehearsal we were all disappointed with how the looked. We went through the section step by step correcting each other through out. We had the hat section looking to a high level and were impressed with how well the sectioned looked by the end of the lesson. We used the rest of the lesson to perfect the choreography that we have already learnt before adding anymore. The recording that we took at the end of the lesson looked a lot more cleaner and we looked more confident as a collective.

Week 11-
We completed todays aim by finishing the piece. Finishing the piece did take the whole lesson, which wasn't as issue we just really wanted to get the choreography finished. We now have next week to polish and add the final small details. Throughout the lesson we did have issues in terms of musicality and this is something that we need to fix for next week and time needs to be spent in our own rehearsal time, so next lesson is spent just performing it and adding final detail. In my opinion, the music was difficult to dance to but this is something that we need to work on as a group.

Week 12-
Today, we really tested our stamina and kept rehearsing the dance throughout the whole lesson going over the sections that we feel wasnt done to the best ability. This did mean that we had to stop start throughout the dance, but this was worth it as we saw the results after recording it at the end of the end of the last studio rehearsal. In term of musicality, we perfected this during the week and didn't have an issue with it in todays final studio rehearsal. We left todays session confident and ready for the stage rehearsals.

And were able to polish the first set of exercises.

Positives
In today lesson, i feel like my core strength was good, allowing me to pirouette without stopping and landing with a controlled finish. I was able to perform three pirouettes without an issue and found this easy. My weight placement throughout the lesson was good and im starting to feel confident with me strengthening my ankles in my spare.

What i need to improve on...
This week i feel like my movement memory was very poor. This was something that i have never struggled with before and am really shocked with my performance. I feel like i have really let myself down this week in terms of remembering the exercises. I will be booking a studio this week to go through all of the exercises. We were able to record them in the previous week so i used this to check the movement. I am determined that i will improve by next week.

This week is the week before our assessment. i need to make sure that i am 100% confident when finished.

Positives
In todays lesson, i believe that my movements memory improved massively. I was confident performing exercises on my own, getting the technique with them also. This was something that i had been working on throughout the week in my spare time. I was able to leave the lesson confident for the assessment in week 5.

What i need to improve on...
Something i need to improve, is releasing tension in my neck whilst dancing. When elongating my neck and posture i tend to hold a lot of tension making my upper body look stiff and tense. I need to work on relaxing my upper body but still remain the correct posture when dancing. My shoulders slightly raise

In todays assessment there were a lot of positives and negatives. One of the positives that i feel went really well was my core control. I was able to feel safe when performing pirouettes and high kicks with core control. I was able to land elevated jumps with control and not allow my ankles to roll, this was because i was holding my core throughout all the exercises. Also, holding my core allowed me to have the correct posture in terms of alignment, pelvis was in line.
Something that i feel needed improvement was my shoulder. Throughout the assessment i felt like my shoulders would raise, which means that i wasn't elongating my upper body tough. My shoulders were worse when i was elevating, i need to relax into my movements and put the tension into my core not shoulders. Another issue that i had during the assessment was my ankles, i feel like i wasn't 100% strong enough. I need to make sure that i am constantly strengthening them building them up. I wish that i had done more strengthening before the assessment when first starting the exercises. I wasn't 100% confident with the exercises which meant that i did hold back slightly. I wasn't as confident as i usually am before an assessment which meant that i was slightly timid. I wish that i had spent more time going over all exercises in the previous week as i would of felt ready for the assessment. I also had a week off due to being ill so i had to catch up on this in my own time.

Overall, i feel like my preparation towards the assessment could of been better strengthening my ankles for character shoes and also learning the exercises making sure they are all in my memory movement. My technique throughout the assessment i felt was good and wasn't an issue that i needed to sort.

Moon and back Rehearsals

Week 6-
During todays rehearsal, we went over the meaning of the piece. This piece has lyrics that are very emotional and explains the love between a couple or family member, Our tutor was basing this piece on the bond that she has with her daughter. From this we knew the sort of emotion that we had to portray, and because this was based on a true relationship we had pressure to do this as best as possible.
The lyrics to this song will help us to find the emotion as its very touching and emotional to listen to. We then went on to learning the first few sets of counts. We left the lesson knowing the meaning and the first section of Moon and back.

Week7-
At the start of todays session we re capped he choreography that we learnt in the previous week. Due to not having a full group in the previous week, we had to teach the girls what we had done last week. This did take up time where we could of been learning more choreography. We then learnt the next minute of the piece, which gives us less than a minute to choreography. We all left todays session confident with what we had done. Watching the rehearsal videos allows me to evaluate my performance, technique and performance wise.
Something i need to improve on in the following week was my musicality. I was out of time and was off the counts. This is something that i will be working on throughout the week. I believe that my performance and project was very positive and i was happy with this when watching it back.

Week 8-
In todays rehearsal, we were able to finish the piece, learning all the new choreography. This was something that we all really worked hard on doing so, we were able to have two weeks to polish and add little details to the piece. By the end of the rehearsal, the piece was very unpolished but we were all confident with the choreography. After looking at the rehearsal videos, the group section needs working on in terms of timing. This is something that we need to work out the counts so we are all confident and knew when the next movement was. We will find time in the week to go through this as we can sort issues out before it gets worse and waste time in next weeks rehearsal.

Week 9-
This week we got given a piece of material that was apart of the piece. This was something that we use throughout the whole piece. We went from the start to the end of the piece making sure we know where to hold the scarf and in what hand they need it in. This took more time than we thought, although was worth it as the end product was very positive. Something that i feel held us back as a group was projection, maybe this was because we were too busy worrying about the prop. Throughout this week we will hold rehearsals with the scarf making sure we are more confident in where we are holding it and changing arms with it.

Week 10-
After having a week of rehearsing this in our spare time, we were confident to perform this as a finished piece. This was something that we were really proud of and was worth putting in the extra rehearsals. We all started to perform and project the piece allowing us to feel the emotion and tell the story through our body language and movements. After watching the rehearsal on video i am confident to put this on stage and perform it. The only thing we weren't able to do was the lift as we were missing a dancer that was a key part in the lift, So this is something that as a group we will have to go through to make sure that everyone is at the same level.

But Jack Cole was also the man who gave Marilyn Monroe her dance moves. Another Cole pupil, Chita Rivera - star of the original Broadway West Side Story - recalls him as a demanding choreographer but, more than 60 years on, says she'll never have cause for complaint.

Rivera is one of the few people still to have memories of dancing with Cole in his prime. She's been a Broadway star since 1957, when she created the role of Anita in West Side Story.

A year before that she'd appeared with Cole on TV on Sid Caesar's comedy show. They performed an extended and powerful version of the jazz standard the Beale Street Blues.

"Jack was extraordinary," Rivera says. "The style he created was like nothing else you'd seen. He could be exciting and scary and maybe you didn't always want to hang around with him - but I'm delighted we got to dance together at the beginning of my career."

Cole was born John Ewing Richter in 1911 into a blue collar family in New Jersey.

The turning point in his career came as a teenager when he started to dance with the Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts. Its founders Ruth St Denis and Ted Shawn had abandoned European balletic tradition to explore other cultures - especially Indian dance.

Improbable as it seems, the Indian influence would still be visible two decades later when Cole devised Marilyn Monroe's most famous dance routine, the Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend sequence.

Rivera recalls how Cole performed. "Jack danced in the floor, as opposed to above the floor. It wasn't so much great balletic leaps - watch Beale St Blues online and you'll see the way Jack moved. There's a mixture of femininity there but also he dances like a guy. Strong, really strong - like a big cat. It's something you see in Rudolf Nureyev as well: they were both very, very male."

"They were enacting a Seminole (American Indian) ritual. But Jack Cole was such a sensual dancer and there was a little bit too much pelvis and too much bare chest - just too much male sensuality. So the performance stayed on the cutting-room floor but his movie career flourished as a choreographer."

Marilyn Monroe's Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend sequence from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes became Cole's best-known number. It's been borrowed by performers including Madonna and Kylie Minogue. For 1953 it was wildly over the top.

In a tight satin dress in shocking fuchsia, Monroe flirts with 20 or so male dancers clad in white tie and tails. Rivera says it's classic Cole.

"Jack was demanding but rightly so. He dictated every last detail of how he wanted you to twist an arm or the exact shape you needed with your hands. I remember once he worked with us for hours on how a particular handclap should sound.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-47814968

Youtube clip-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcwwcPvoCjU

Signature Style

Cole’s movement is typified by huge leaps from deep pliés, rapid direction changes, long knee slides, syncopation and isolations of the head, arms and fingers. His rigorous warm-up is legendary—it included push-ups against a wall—and he auditioned dancers with a ballet barre.

Much of his work features a dynamic soloist (often female), backed by an all-male corps of dancers. This formula popularized the femme fatale vision—female strength, rooted in sexuality.

https://www.dance-teacher.com/history-lesson-plan-jack-cole-2392429308.html

Suzi Taylor-Historical Lyrical Jazz

The beginning of Suzi Taylor’s lyrical jazz class closely resembles a ballet barre—except there isn’t a physical barre to cling to and there aren’t pauses for rest between exercises. It’s a strenuous, nonstop warm-up packed with all the tools of classical technique: pliés with port de bras, rond de jambe en l’air and fondu. At one point, Taylor, sweaty from leading the class full-out, runs around the room to shape students’ feet as they balance in sur le cou-de-pied. It isn’t until an hour in that the dancers get to take on her choreography full of expansive shapes and gooey transitions.

Technicians like Taylor are rare in today’s choreography-obsessed industry, where classes outside the codified forms quite rarely reach beyond the stretch-and-learn-a-combo equation. “Style has become a technique and it drives me crazy,” says Taylor, who teaches with New York City Dance Alliance and at Steps on Broadway. “You almost have to threaten kids to take ballet these days.”

When she first moved to New York, the term lyrical, a subset of jazz, was just becoming a brand. The style budded in California, where Taylor studied under Doug Caldwell, one of lyrical’s early teachers. And though many stamp her class with the label, Taylor doesn’t often use it herself. “When they decided to name it lyrical, I was like, ‘What the heck is that?’” she says. “I always found that a weird thing to call it. Sure, I use music with lyrics sometimes, but often I don’t. What really got people interested in my class was the floorwork and exploring movement that was familiar, but not necessarily ‘big and jazzy.’”

Taylor says she understands that since then, dance trends and training have shifted—e.g. the often indefinable style of contemporary has become a mainstream favorite. “There’s some beautiful contemporary work happening professionally that I really admire, but I worry when young dancers attempt it and don’t understand where the movements are coming from. It takes them out of the process of training, and that’s not doing much to prepare them for their professional life.”

This fall, Taylor became an adjunct professor at Pace University’s commercial BFA program. And while she loves the vibrant communities at Steps and NYCDA, she’s excited to work with students at a different stage in their dancing. “It’s hard to find a consistency of people who want to train,” she says. “I’m a teacher, and I like this work because I want to see the changes that happen with them.”

Suzi Taylor trained in Southern California with Douglas Caldwell, Jaime Rogers and Philip and Charles Fuller before moving to New York City. There, she studied at The Ailey School and with Doug Wassel, David Howard and Finis Jhung. She has been teaching at Steps on Broadway for 25 years and is a founding teacher at New York City Dance Alliance. In fall 2013, she joined the dance faculty at Pace University.

https://www.dance-teacher.com/suzi-taylor-2392454870.html

Youtube Clips-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEicpyGFhN8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sf6chjydpg

Additional Research-
Ballet is the original dance form. Ballet usually tells a story. It makes dance more interesting to watch-- especially for people who don't really understand dance. Americans have been involved in much of the change that dance has gone through in the last century.

Jazz dance originates from the Africans and showcases each dancer's individual style. Jazz then evolved to Broadway jazz. The movements in this form of jazz are more exaggerated than original jazz dance.

Dance is no longer just disciplined ballet. It is now a category that contains styles like lyrical and jazz. However, ballet will always be the first form of dance. It is the foundation of all other styles of dance.

Lyrical dance forms have an important base in ballet. It is expressive and dynamic, and commonly set to music with vocals.

Dance is an independent art form. You might view dance differently from someone else. But dance has changed significantly since the start of ballet.

https://prezi.com/uvsgwvts8eiv/how-has-dance-changed-over-time/

The Qualities of Lyrical Dance

One of the most prevalent qualities of lyrical dance is the continuation of movement. The choreography is usually designed to have the movements flow very naturally and smoothly into each other, with little or no stopping or moments of stillness. While sharp movements such as contractions or spiking with limbs can be integrated for emphasis at certain parts of the dance, usually the movements are flowing, "carving" and "arcing", with many curving pathways created and merging into each other.

https://dance.lovetoknow.com/Lyrical_Dancing

History

Jazz dance originated from the African American vernacular dance of the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. An early popular "jazz dancer" was vaudeville star Joe Frisco in the 1910s. He danced in a loose-limbed style close to the ground while juggling his derby, hat and cigar.
Until the middle of 1950s, the term "jazz dance" often referred to tap dance, because tap dancing (set to jazz music) was the main performance dance of the era. During the later jazz age, popular forms of jazz dance were the Cakewalk, Black Bottom, Charleston, Jitterbug, Boogie Woogie, Swing dancing and the related Lindy Hop.

After the 1950, pioneers such as Katherine Dunham took the essence of Caribbean traditional dance and made it into a performing art. With the growing domination of other forms of entertainment music, jazz dance evolved on Broadway into a new, smooth style taught today and known as Modern Jazz, while tap dance continued to evolve on its own. The performance style was popularized by Bob Fosse’s work, such as Chicago, Cabaret, Damn Yankees, and The Pajama Game.

Today, jazz dance is present in many different venues and different forms. Jazz dance thrives in dance schools and remains an essential part of musical theater choreography; it is sometimes interwoven with other dance styles as appropriate for the particular show. Jazz dancing can be seen in some music videos, and even a number of Las Vegas showgirls are jazz dancers. Jazz Dance can also be seen on the hit show, "So You Think You Can Dance", and is performed by dance companies around the world.

Technique
Technique is the foundation for all dance movement. A strong technical foundation enables a dancer to focus on the stylistic and performance aspects of dance. Technique is essential for jumps and turns, where correct posture is essential to properly execute such moves. Also, jazz dancers' strong and sharp movements are greatly aided by a good background in ballet technique.

Center control is important in jazz technique. The body's center is the focal point from which all movement emanates, thus making it possible to maintain balance while executing powerful movements.

Jazz classes require some form of moderate intensity stretching in order to warm up the muscles and help prevent injuries. Some techniques used in the warm up consist of elongating leg muscles and strengthening the core.
Notable Directors, Dancers, and Choreographers

Katherine Dunham, considered the grandmaster of jazz dance technique. Fosse was one of six children and grew up surrounded by dance and theater. At the age of 13, he teamed up with another young dancer, Charles Grass. The talented couple toured throughout Chicago theaters as "The Riff Brothers." A couple of years later, Fosse was hired to star in a show called "Tough Situation" which toured a number of military and naval bases. Fosse believed that he perfected his performance technique during his time with the show.

Dance Career of Bob Fosse

After taking years of acting classes, Fosse moved to Hollywood to begin a film career. He appeared in several films including "Give A Girl A Break", "The Affairs of Dobie Gillis" and "Kiss Me Kate." Fosse's film career was cut short due to premature baldness, so he turned to choreography. In 1954 he successfully choreographed "The Pajama Game." Fosse went on to direct five feature films, including "Cabaret", which won eight Academy Awards. Under his direction, "All That Jazz" won four Academy Awards, earning Fosse his third Oscar nomination.

Dance Style of Bob Fosse

Fosse's unique jazz dance style was stylish, sexy, and easily recognized. After growing up in cabaret nightclubs, the nature of Fosse's signature style was sexually suggestive. Three of his dance trademarks included turned-in knees, sideways shuffling, and rolled shoulders.

Deceptive Simplicity

Most Fosse dancers say that the biggest challenge they face when learning his choreography is figuring out how to execute the detailed movements. “The work is fragile,” says legendary Fosse protégé Ann Reinking. “If you don’t do it with the specificity it needs, it can fall apart.” For example, “There’s something amazing about the beginning of his ‘Rich Man’s Frug’ from Sweet Charity,” says Nikka Graff Lanzarone, who plays Velma in Chicago on Broadway. “Really, all they’re doing is walking, but the way they’re walking [with rigid posture and their noses toward the ceiling] is telling you everything you need to know about the characters. It relies on such tiny details. And you have no tricks to hide behind, so you have to get them all exactly right.”

Fosse dancers must be able to isolate everything, right down to their eyeballs, elbows and fingers. When a Fosse dancer learns to focus her energy in stillness, she can grab the audience with a simple flutter of her fingers. “It should look like you’re not working at all—but you’ll come off stage sweating,” says Lanzarone.

Desmond Richardson, the co-founder of Complexions Contemporary Ballet who was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in the musical revue Fosse, says he struggled with Fosse’s usage of hands and arms. “Your elbows are often back, and your hands are splayed forward,” he explains. “I could do it, but I wasn’t accustomed to it—it took some time. My arms would be really sore afterward. But now it’s in my body.”

Repetition is the key to mastering these small movements. “Fosse would take one count of eight and make you do it over and over and over,” says Broadway and Fosse veteran Rachelle Rak. “Something happens after all that repetition. Suddenly it feels good—you know, that feeling when you get something.”

Students learn "Rich Man's Frug" in Diana Laurenson's Fosse workshop at Broadway Dance Center in NYC. Photo courtesy Broadway Dance Center.

Theatricality

Fosse performers must tell a story. “Bob never called us dancers. He would always call us his actors, because everything he did came from an acting standpoint—from an idea or emotion,” says Diana Laurenson, a master theater dance teacher at Broadway Dance Center who worked personally with Fosse. “Every move you make is infused with character and story.”

It’s crucial that you develop an ability to control your movement while still maintaining a strong sense of intention. Laurenson warns against over-dancing. “Sometimes less is more,” she says. “There are moments in Fosse’s choreography when you don’t throw it in their laps. You want them to sit forward and come to you.” Reinking adds: “You’re almost quiet, and yet you come off as powerful—not necessarily big, but powerful. It’s as if you are doing a Shakespearean soliloquy. ‘To be or not to be’ has to be strong. The great actors don’t shout it, but it is strong.”

The best way to develop your control is to keep training in modern, jazz, tap and especially ballet. Some of the best Fosse dancers were ballet dancers first, including Reinking, Richardson and Elizabeth Parkinson. “I found that the same quality that was asked of me as a ballet dancer was asked of me as a Fosse dancer: That adherence and dedication to the line, and to making that line look good,” says Reinking. “You have to have the same clear, well-trained eye to perform Mr. Fosse’s work.”

Fosse Action Words

Bob Fosse used a variety of unique phrases to describe his signature movements, and many of these terms are still around today. Here, Broadway and Fosse veteran Rachelle Rak shares a few of her favorites to help you prep for your next Fosse class.

“Slow burn”: An intense gaze that shifts slowly from one side of the stage to the other or from back to front. See it in Cabaret as Liza Minnelli faces upstage, then slowly turns in her chair to look at the audience before she sings “Mein Herr.”

“Broken doll walk”: A pigeon-toed walk downstage. Your elbows are glued to your torso, jazz hands reach out to your sides and your hips swing slightly. See it in “Bye Bye Blackbird” in Fosseas the dancers sing “Here I go, swingin’ low.”

“Crescent jump”: A jump in place with one leg in parallel coupé and the other straight. Jazz hands extend high above your head as you reach far to one side, making a “C” with your body. See it in “Sing Sing Sing” in Fosse—the dancers do it over and over again during the climax of the music.

“Soft-boiled-egg hand”: A cupped-hand position. Imagine that you’re holding an egg just tight enough to avoid dropping or crushing it. See it in “Bye Bye Blackbird” in Fosse.

Straight from The PULSE On Tour, Brian Friedman, Producer/Director/Choreographer/Fashion Designer is one of the hottest directors for some of today’s most popular concert tours, music videos, commercials and films. Friedman was one of the first choreographers to use the style and initially referred to it as “ganking.” Using Britney Spears as his muse, he created his own recipe for a “ganky stew,” which he describes as “a mixture of drag queen performance, vogueing, house and thrashy jazz.” He adds: “It has to be powerful and dominant, almost like you’re getting into a fight with a dance move. Mash it, stab it, kill it and then walk away with confidence.”

Working with Marguerite Derricks as a kid developed my sense of cleanliness. She was very specific about hand placement and stylistic choices—that's where I got my Fosse influence. Jamie King was all about musicality and speed. He moved so quickly choreographing, pulling out sounds in the music the normal ear wouldn't hear and making them part of the choreography. I worked with Kenny Ortega when I was very young. He'd create organic movements, which was a completely unfamiliar process to me as a competitive dancer. I didn't know you could make up moves that weren't already part of someone else's vocabulary. I found my own vocabulary thanks to my mentors, Marguerite, Jamie, and Kenny.
