Many students tend to be passive listeners rather than active participants. This passive learning can hinder their understanding and engagement. The key to improving student involvement lies in encouraging active listening, where students focus, respond, and engage with the material. This topic caught my attention as a novice teacher who wants to build successful teaching practices. For this, I analysed other people’s written ideas about the importance of active listening, conducted a survey with students and colleagues to learn their opinions about listening activities I implemented in my microteaching, and observed students’ reaction when I conducted active listening tasks in the classroom. By using interactive activities, asking thought-provoking questions, and creating a dynamic learning environment, teachers can shift students from passive to active listening. In this presentation, I will explore effective strategies to make students truly listen and participate actively in lessons.

This is my research topic. I chose this topic because when I worked at an educational center as an English teacher, I had some challenges related to teaching listening. When I did listening activities in the classroom, students did not understand or they had no interest in them. I gave some listening tasks as homework, but they copied their work from each other again. This led me to research this topic.

Throughout this research, I have explored different ways to transition students from passive to active listening. The findings from questionnaires, observations, and student performance assessments have provided valuable insights into what engages students and what challenges they face.

One of the key takeaways is that interactive activities such as “listen and draw” significantly improve student engagement. Students found these exercises interesting and enjoyable, which made them more attentive during listening tasks. Additionally, pre-listening activities proved to be highly effective. When students were given some context or prepared beforehand, they found it easier to follow and understand the content.

However, one of the main challenges was story-based listening, as some students struggled to keep up with the narrative. This highlighted the importance of breaking down stories into smaller parts and incorporating guiding questions to help them process information step by step.

Another crucial finding was that students responded better when given positive feedback and encouragement. Simple phrases like “Good job!” or “Well done!” motivated them to participate more actively. Moreover, they enjoyed learning about topics related to their personal interests, such as shopping and love, which suggests that making lessons relatable is essential for maintaining engagement.

Collaborative work also played a significant role in enhancing participation. When students worked in pairs or groups, they felt more comfortable sharing their thoughts and checking answers together. This not only improved their listening comprehension but also built their confidence.

Reflecting on these findings, I have realized that engagement in listening tasks is not just about the content but also about how it is delivered. Moving forward, I plan to incorporate more active listening techniques, ensure that topics are relevant to students’ interests, and provide structured pre-listening support. These strategies will help create a more engaging and effective learning environment, ultimately fostering students’ ability to listen actively rather than passively.
