Teaching Experience & Future Plans

I have been teaching at Camdenton R-III school district in Camdenton, Missouri for the past three years as a 7th grade math teacher. I currently teach 115 students either 7th grade math, 7th grade Accelerated (Pre-Algebra), and 7th grade Algebra. What captured my interest in curriculum and instruction is the unpacking process my district is going through. I am on the curriculum committee for the math department, and I think it is very interesting how standards are aligned to current practices. It is almost a math or logic puzzle to figure out which instructional strategy or activity aligns to the standard in the most effective way. In 5-10 years I hope to become an instructional coach, gain some experience, and then apply for a job as a professor of education at a college or university.

My name is Kelsey Brown, I'm 24 years old, and I am having a wonderful time teaching at Camdenton Middle school in the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks! My parents and little sister live in St. Louis, but they love to come visit. In my spare time, I like to read, scrapbook, and play with my puppy Hank.

Currently, I believe that people learn best when they have a hands-on experience. This doesn't necessarily mean a real-world application; students can manipulate the material and organize their learning to create a solution that is entirely content based. An example of this that I use in my classroom is card sort/match activities. Given a set of linear equations, students can sort them by slope, or they can match the equations that have the same solution.

What works best for me is being able to sort information in a way that makes sense. That could mean color coding or creating graphic organizers and mind maps. I have reflected this in my classroom by implementing interactive notebooks for my students to take notes and keep a "field guide" of all the new information they learn in math class.
