Three dominant plant species of the temperate desert are wild onions, the goyo plant, and cistanche. The wild onions are used for medicine and food. The goyo plant absorbs carbon dioxide at night instead of the day and they have extra long roots allowing them to reach more abundant water sources.

Human Impacts on Temperate Deserts

1. There are a lot of parks in deserts. These parks are heavily traveled, and oftentimes, people drive off the road and onto the sensitive desert soil. Since it is so dry, it is easy to displace and disrupt the sandy soil in the desert.
2. Temperate deserts are remote areas, perfect for testing of potentially harmful substances. The government uses temperate deserts often for nuclear testing and other military endeavors, including training. Any human development in the desert is harmful, but especially this type, which is chemical and traffic heavy.
3. The construction of pipelines in deserts is particularly stressful for the environment. People that live in cities outside of the desert need water, oil, and other resources that are most easily transported through the desert. When pipelines are constructed the desert soil is disrupted, the animals must relocate, and water is taken from the already dry biome.
