An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilised egg implants itself outside of the uterus. Commonly the embryo implants itself in the fallopian tubes but other areas may include the abdomen (outside the reproductive system) and the cervix. The uterus is able to stretch and grow throughout the pregnancy where as the fallopian tube cannot. As the embryo/fetus continues to grow it stretches the tube. This can be very painful and may cause the tube to tear and burst. An ectopic pregnancy may also shrink on its own and a miscarriage will occur.

An ectopic pregnancy must be treated to stop it from growing. If it is not treated it could lead to serious internal bleeding and occasionally even death.
There are 3 options:
Surgery-The surgery is usually done using keyhole surgery.

A laparoscopy is done under a general anaesthetic. A small cut is made in your abdomen. A tiny telescope is inserted into your abdomen to view your internal organs.

Medication- Treatment using medication should only be used if the ectopic pregnancy is very small and there is no sign that you have internal bleeding.
Wait and See

Having an Ectopic pregnancy may affect your future fertility, and it increases your risk of having another ectopic pregnancy. When an Ectopic Pregnancy grows in a fallopian tube, it can damage the surrounding tubal tissue. This may make it more likely that an egg will get stuck there in the future. In Australia around five, I every 1000 pregnancies are ectopic, and in most cases, the embryo does not survive. For medical reasons we usually recommend waiting two months after surgery and three to four months after medication before getting pregnant again. Because it is possible to become pregnant again straight away, you will need to use contraception.
