Chapter 1 : The Stolen Letters

In Chapter 1,we meet Violet, Mother Chloe and Steven. The story is set in 1920, and women can't vote yet. Violet finds letters from her older sister Chloe that her mother hid from her. Chloe got sent away from her parents. She now lives in NY city. She is a nurse and drives her own car,and is a "New Women" Which means she wants women to have the right to vote. Violet is very upset at her Mother because she hid the letters for years. Violet misses Chloe so much. Her best friend Flossie died two years ago from the influenza, or the Spanish flu. Her brother Stephan is about Chloe's age and we don't know much about him. In the end, Chloe is on the banks of the Susquehanna river feeling very mad at her parents for hiding the letters.

Chapter 2: The Dying Mrs.Renwick

Violet was so mad at her parents that she decided to run away from home to live with her sister Chloe. So she hopped on a train with her ticket that she spent all her money on to go see her sister , but the lady sitting across from her was looking at her weirdly. The lady sitting across from her starts talking to Violet turns out her names Mrs.Renwick and she's dying but the doctors can't figure out why. Mrs.Renwick is an anti-suffragist and is slightly rude, later she buys candy for Violet. After that conversation with Mrs.Renwick "if girls can't do anything but get married have a hope Chest and have lots of kids then I would rather be born a boy "she says to herself.

Chapter 3: Meeting Myrtle

In Chapter 3, the theme is that when scared and you are about to give up you might find something good. Like how Violet found Myrtle in the middle of giving up right after she fell in horse poop Myrtle helped her find where Chloe's letters were sent from. Myrtle also helped her feel better in the situation she was in. Myrtle was very kind to Violet and she was very thankful for Myrtle's help.

Chapter 4: Henry Street

Myrtle and Violet got to Henry Street settlement house they decided that they weren't going to knock so they went in and saw an ordinary hall with a carpet and umbrella stand. Violet out of the corner of her eye saw a door they rushed to the door and pushed it open. It was a parlor there was a man reading a book then Myrtle said" Excuse me"Good evening" he replied" they started talking then she asked about Chloe and where she was he asked" why are you asking?"later on in this very long conversation he says that she moved to Washington.D.C. She wanted to cry but couldn't in public so they left, shortly after she began to cry Myrtle isn't great at comforting people. Violet ran to the train station she said that she wants to see Chloe but didn't have the money to do so Washington .D.C being over 200 miles away and it being 2 cents a mile.

Chapter 5: Hobie and the Brakeman

The Theme of Chapter five is that just because somebody looks different doesn't mean that they can't be trusted or aren't nice. In the start of Chapter five they want to go to Washington to find Chloe but don't have money. Then this dude comes up to them and Myrtle doesn't mind that he looks different but she thinks they need to leave. But in reality he was just trying to help and he did help them a lot really.

Chapter 6: It all Comes Down to Tennessee

The Theme of Chapter 6, is don't judge someone by their skin color. For example when Violet first met Myrtle she was a little bit skeptical of her because of her skin but now she is friends with her. In Chapter 6 they get to Washington then go to Myrtles old street to get somewhat clean. Then they went to this house where supposedly Chloe lives in. She knocks on the door and a girl welcomes her in later after they talk a bit she tells her that Chloe is in Tennessee.

Chapter 7: Heading to Nashville

In the beginning Myrtle and Violet were going down stairs to eat ,Miss Dexter welcomed her and slid a plate of toast to the girls Miss Dexter doesn't like colored people as they would say. Then they see Mr. Martin standing there talking to Miss Dexter after talking to Mr. Martin.They find out that Mr.Martin will be going to Nashville with them. A little while later after talking a lot they hop on a train. Once they get on the conductor says" oh this won't work this lady needs to go to the colored car" Mr.Martin explains that Myrtle was too young to go there alone Mr.Martin Miss Dexter and the conductor get in a heated argument.

Chapter 8: In the Jim Crow Car

In Chapter 8, Violet ,Myrtle ,Miss Dexter and Mr.Martin were on the train but Myrtle was in the colored part. Which was normal at this time but now is unacceptable. Turns out that Mr.Martin didn't win the argument. Now Myrtle is in the Crow car sitting next to this lady to her looks ancient they talk for a while and she finds out that the lady believes that even if women get the right to vote that they won't let colored people vote. After that interesting conversation the lady falls asleep.

Chapter 9: Mr.Martin's Escape

In Chapter 9, Violet and Myrtle realize that Mr. Martin is running away from the police. They don't know what he did wrong. Two men called Palmer agents tried to find Mr. Martin, and they question the suffragists about him and accuse the women of not being very intelligent because they are female. The two men treated the women like they were dumb. We see examples of inequality with the Jim Crow car and Myrtle being separated from the rest of the group. Another example of inequality is between men and women, we can tell the agents don't think women should get the right to vote.

Chapter 10: Red and Yellow Roses

Violet helps a woman who had fallen and was upset about losing her son in the war, and Violet gets angry about the way women have to sit in silence while men make decisions that affect them. It is unequal and unfair that women are not allowed to be a part of the decision-making process. We meet Miss Charlotte Rowe and she accompanies Violet from the train station to the hotel where she is staying. When Violet walks toward the entrance of the hotel, she is told by Miss Rowe that women use a different entrance at the side of the building. It is unequal that women and men cannot enter by the same entrance, and it is unfair that women have to enter at the side of the building, as if they aren’t important enough to enter at the front.

Chapter 11: Finding Chloe

In Chapter 11 we see the theme “inequality is injustice.” Violet is hungry and wants to find somewhere to eat, but is told she can’t eat in one of the hotel restaurants because it is for men only. It is unequal and unfair that men and women cannot eat in the same restaurant, especially given that there isn’t a restaurant just for women. She also realizes that the woman who pinned a red rose on her at the train station was an Anti, and she was staying in an Anti room at the hotel. She finds out she can eat sandwiches if she goes to the Anti's meeting. As she listens to them speak, she learns how they are getting men to change their minds about voting on the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. Violet overheard some people talking and they said, "Mayhew" and she got really excited to finally see Chloe! Chloe and Violet finally see each other and Violet tells Chloe she had ran away from home to find her. Chloe is really tired and doesn't seem to be much help to find Myrtle or Mr. Martin.

Chapter 12: Violet Spies

Violet wakes up and is greeted by Miss Lewis. Which Chloe had told her was sleeping in the bed next to her. Violet wanted to go to the train station to try to find Myrtle and Mr.M Martin but Miss Lewis said to eat some food first so Violet grabbed some food and she was on her way. Chloe showed up just when she got there. Violet thinks she sees some Hobo's that reminded her of Hobbie. Then she realized it was Myrtle and Mr.Martin, Chloe sees them and is not pleased. Chloe and Mr.Martin have a quick argument and head to the hotel. They didn't except colored people in the hotel so Mr.Martin besides to get food with Myrtle and try to find a colored and white hotel.

Chapter 13: Dead Horse Alley

In the beginning Mr.Martin and Myrtle were trying to find a place that they could eat something they went all over town but couldn't find a place that wouldn't make them eat in the alley. later they gave in and ate in an alley. After they ate they had to find a place that would allow a white man and a colored girl once again they searched the whole town and eventually got a place to stay. In the middle of the Chapter we switch to Violet and what she is doing. Violet is starting the spy duty because Chloe thought it was a great idea. So she went back to the hermitage hotel and went into the room that Anti gave her from the train station. She walked in and a woman about 30 jumped in shock then she told Violet about the thing tonight and that's the end of that Chapter.

Chapter 14: Max Blooomstein's Pharmacy

Myrtle was wondering what she would do when all this was over and who would take care of her. Myrtle went to go get newspapers and groceries to keep Mr.Martin busy but he seemed to want to go out more which she didn't want because of the palmer agents. Unfortunately he was dedicated to going outside but Myrtle distracted him by talking about Chloe and how he should tell her that he likes her and get married. Mr.Martin turned red and said that she was too pretty for him and stuff Myrtle mint it as in that Chloe and him get married and adopt her because she didn't know what to do. Mr.Martin goes out to see Chloe and ends up having a big argument but the whole time Violet was wondering if Myrtle was near and turns out she was even though she wasn't supposed to do that. Violet finds out that half of the people are voting on the Susan B Anthony amendment today.

Chapter 15: The Ferocious Mrs.Catt

In the beginning Violet was in the dining room at the Hermitage Hotel with the Antis. She was very amazed by them buying loads of fancy food without a worry in their mind except the Suffs of course. Then this person which Violet thought was named Mr. Garlick and it was, dropped his utensil Violet dropped to the ground to pick it up and herd their conversation. Which when she started hearing them listened closely because she is still a spy. Turns out they were talking about a kidnapping of one legislature for the Suff side and they were going to do int of course she found this out after the fact that a good of custard fell on her. Immediately left to see Chloe and tell her what happened. But she was in the ballroom clearly making a legislature have a good time suddenly Mr.Martin showed up and asked to dance which really was not good manners when Chloe was already dancing with someone. But Violet saw the legislature walking towards an Anti so she ran to him and asked to dance they danced for a while then you could tell he wanted to dance with another lady so she called over a Suff lady to dance with him. At the end of the dance she told Chloe and Mr.Martin and they said they would get that man a body guard. then they went to get ice cream and went back but Myrtle was actually following them and at the end we met this lady named Mrs.Catt who was talking about how Violet was for a different side but she didn't know about the spy thing so Violet told her and they were fine.

Chapter 16:

In the beginning Chloe was teaching Myrtle and Violet how to drive the hope Chest / her car, of course Mr.Martin was there for some reason. After they decided to go to the dead horse alley and two men came and arrested Mr.Martin. After Myrtle was confused so she went to Ms.ready the place she was going. She came in to Ms.Ready telling her that it's ok that mans gone and stuff like that.

Chapter 17: The Hope Chest

In the beginning of this chapter Myrtle was running to Chloe and Violet with a tooth brush in her hand and told them what had happened to Mr.Martin. Then Chloe told violet to stay there while she ran to see what was happening and if he is still there or not. Next Violet decides to go get the Hope Chest / the car and drives it to see if she could find the legislature that she was told to find. She then found the legislature and brought him back to the voting place. After she went to the pharmacy she meets Chloe every day but she didn't show up and Violet started worrying. Finally she went back to the place she Spies at but reveals she is a Suff and her lady roommate says she thinks that she is one to and it made quite the racket at dinner.
