Alchemy is the idea that basic metals can be used to create precious metals such as gold and silver.
Alchemy was not only the belief that basic metals can be used to create precious metals but also that they precious metals were very much alive. The belief is that a tiny nugget in the ground was able to grow and continue growing. As well alchemists believed everything had a spirit. Although alchemy is a historical science, and we cannot actually change things like lead into gold, it set many of the basis' we have for today's modern chemistry

Although Alchemy is referred to have been the basis for modern day chemistry, it had two separate sides to it. Yes, it deals greatly with making gold from basic metals, but it also was a science That practiced spirituality and philosophy, believing that everything had a sort of living aspect to it... Similar to the point mentioned, where they believed a gold nugget would grow inside the earths crust and continue to grow. If we related that to today, many scientists are fact based thinkers, it's a very different world from then and now.

Alchemy was seen to be a society which was exclusive to themselves; chosen by god or close to god you could say. To be able to understand the language and symbols they used you needed to either be fluent in the language or have a codex to break the codeThey believed that all life grew, and mainly sought to reveal how we everything was created.

100-300 AD could possibly have been the earliest we had heard of the philosophers stone. We have heard mention of the philosopher's stone by stories over time, for example, the Disney movie the sorcerer's apprentice and Harry Potter: The Sorcerer's stone. To hold or be able to create the elixir of life or philosopher's stone meant that you would be immortal, as well you would be regarded in a very high manner.
