Students will be able to subtract using numbers within 20. Students will be able to learn subtraction using numbers within 20 by using Minecraft. In Minecraft students will be able to solve subtraction problems using scenarios, for example in a made up farm students can harvest carrots and see how many are left to harvest.

Readiness Level 1

On Minecraft education you can change the difficulty level. For the first readiness level we will have them build a house and the problems will be 2 digit numbers minus a 1 digit numbers. Ex: 10-3.

Readiness Level 2

For Readiness level 2 the students will be doing 2 digit numbers minus other 2 digit numbers. (20-12) They will be building multiple houses other than just one singular house.

Readiness Level 3

Here the students will be going through more of an “obstacle course” on the app. The problems they will be presented with will be two digit numbers minus two digit numbers. The numbers will go above 20 though but not extremely high. Max number will b e 35. Ex: 32-25

Lesson Details

First we will be review simple subtraction.

They then will be split into groups based off their readiness levels.

We will help them log onto Minecraft education and they will be working in their readiness level groups.

We will be walking around monitoring and helping the students as they go through the problems.

At the end of lesson to look for comprehension they will fill out an exit slip. Depending on the readiness level the exit slips will be a little different.

Why we think Minecraft Education is a good tool

Minecraft education is a fun easy way to engage students in math. They can work together as a team or work individually. Plus most kids play Minecraft anyway so this gives them a tool that most kids are familiar with and it is easy to navigate for students who might not be as familiar with it.

We also like how it goes beyond math. It helps to promote many other concepts that they will need as they go through their academic careers.

As the students go through each problem they will record the problems on a sheet of paper and show work. At the end of the class they will turn in their completed work to us.

The students will be given an exit slip towards the end of the class and it will check for comprehension. They also wil write a short sentence on how their collaboration with their peers helped them to get through the problems/ make their creation.

Misconceptions

When subtracting two multi digit numbers, students always subtracts the smaller number from the larger number rather than regrouping.
Students make mistakes when regrouping across zeroes in a subtraction problem.
