The first thing I thoughts was, "Wow! I have a lot to accomplish!" Looking at my list, some of them were achievements such as obtaining tenure and others were more student driven such as building relationships and having students recognize science around them. I enjoyed creating this list because as a new teacher, I have a lot to think about and aspire to become. I think the overall theme of my list is to continue growing as a teacher! Making my strengths even stronger and having less weaknesses.

Thinking about my retirement party, that seems SO far away, but it was interesting to reflect upon. It’s crazy to be thinking about my retirement, when this is my first year teaching!  Right now I am just so excited for my first summer as a teacher, that that’s about all I can think about! HA!  Once I started thinking about it though, I thought that I want my coworkers to remember me for the same thing as I want my students to.  I want to be remembered for my hard work, my drive, my passion, and my connection to my students.  If those things are mentioned during my retirement party, I know I’d have done well.

My top three were to see growth with my students, get kids to enjoy math, and to make schools more inclusive for LGBTQ+ students, families, and staff.
Retirement is such a strange concept to me.  I am in year 7 of teaching so it seems like forever away.  And yet at the same time, the first students I taught in our district are seniors this year and I am starting to get invites to events that make me go "Wait what?  You are graduating???"

After reviewing my list, I am noticing a pattern. My list is mainly made up of making sure  my students are safe and know they are cared about and for myself to continue to grow as an educator. My top three hopes are: I hope school is viewed as a safe place for all students and staff, All of my students find many successes through the year and I continue to grow as an educator year after year. I also hope that these are the things my students remember about me in 15 years. I always tell my students that they can always count on me forever and I will always be around to help them out. 

As far as retirement, this is tough! I hope the person who speaks is a co-worker who I've worked with for a long time who knows me as an educator and also a friend. I hope they are able to speak about my passion for teaching and the hard work I put in to give my students the best education. I am currently planning the retirement party for 6 staff member that have been critical in our small school- it will be a huge hole!! It's been fun to listen to how impactful they have been. We are hoping many students come back for it which will be quite emotional for them. As I sat down and started working on my list, the ideas just started to flow out naturally. The first half of my list was focused on my students and all my hopes and dreams for them. I found my overall theme for my students is that they know they are cared for and are successful. The second half of my list was about myself as an educator and how I want to continue to grow. As I reflected on my half of the list, my list is still focused around myself and how I can be better or improve for my students. 

As far as my retirement party (which feels like so far way), I would hope someone shares how much I cared about my students and how much of an impact I made on them.

I really hope that students talk at my party.  I am very shy with my team members and I feel like I would have the most impact with my students.  They are the reason I do what I do.

  • Upon reviewing my list of hopes it is clear that I want to continue working on being the best teacher I can be without slowing down on that endeavor. 
  • 15 years after having me as their teacher, I want students to say that they knew I loved and cared for them. I want them to say that I did what was best for their own personal learning and challenged them where they needed challenging. I hope they would say I provided fun and engaging learning that they enjoyed. I hope they would say that I was always at the door to greet them in the morning and say goodbye to them as they left. 
  • Whew! Retirement is hard to think about. If I had to choose now for someone to speak at my retirement party it would be my current principal. He was the first admin. that told me the positives he saw in me and my teaching. 
  • I hope he would speak about how I try to make a calm while also exciting environment for learning. I hope he would speak about my belief that “Kids Deserve It.” I hope that he would speak about how I am willing to go the extra mile and work the extra hours to make community events happen within and outside of the school day happen.     My biggest take away from writing down my 10 hopes is that I want my students to know that I truly loved and cared about them.     5. I would hope their speech would include the words responsible, caring, ethical,  not afraid to try things outside the box and my sense of humor.  I believe this job cannot be done without one.

Reflect on the Padlet below: Since teaching is my second career and my Master's Degree is somewhat later in my life retirement really is not all that many years away verses someone in their 20's.  This reflection makes me want to try harder to make the biggest difference I can in my students lives so I am confident I have made a difference.

    15 years after I leave the classroom, I would like students to say that they enjoyed my class!  Music is so much about experience and community - I would like them to say that they had fun and connected with me and their classmates.

    As far as the speech, I would want my music team colleagues to speak at my funeral.  They know me the best, and I would hope that they would talk about how passionate I was, how good I was at connecting with students, and how much I cared for their well being.

    When reflecting on this is stood out to me that my goals are not on the quality of work or things that I want to accomplish in having them do. They have to do with how I will make a student feel in my room and how I will inspire them into the future. 

    At my retirement party I hope that students will have learned these things and that they kept growing in these areas in their later educational career.     As I am a new teacher, it is hard to imagine what students would say to me in 15 years, but I know I want to be the like my mom. She is case manager for about 40 at risk kids, every single day she shows up, believes in her students, and creates positive relationships. Students on the verge of not graduating high school leave her room successful. She is far beyond a teacher. She is a mentor, believer, and mother to many who don't have one. 

    I really enjoyed thinking about my 10 hopes as a teacher. I believe my mother and many other teachers growing up have inspired me when writing these hopes. I think keeping these three present on my desk for the rest of the school year will be valuable!
