Ursus arctos

Grizzlies are large brown bears that weigh anywhere from 200-850 lbs. They are about 3 feet tall and 6-7 feet long. They can run at up to speeds of 35 miles per hour and live about 20-25 years. Males are typically larger than females and have a large, blocky muzzle. They also have longer legs and are more muscular. The ears are set far apart. Females, on the other hand, are smaller in size, have a tapered muzzle, and their ears are smaller and closer together than a male's are.

These mammals have a gestation period of about 6-9 months. However, bears mate in the spring, but do not become pregnant until the Fall or early winter. A female bear will prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus until the bear has gained enough weight to survive the winter. For the most part, the biggest part of the gestation period is during the hibernation period.

Male grizzly bears are a danger to cubs, so the cubs are raised by their mothers. A typical litter has about 2-4 cubs. After 2-3 years, the cubs go into the wild on their own.

In North America, these bears can be found in mountainous terrains and in arctic plains. Also, they can be found in the dense forests and valleys of Montana and Wyoming. Human pollution causes a problem to the habitat of these animals because humans visit the National Parks that these bears call home.
