Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States who led the country through the Great Depression and WWII, while expanding the powers of the federal government through a series of reforms known as the “New Deal.” In office from 1933 to his death in 1952, Roosevelt was the only American president to serve four terms. During WWII, Roosevelt began a series of measures to help defend France and Britain from Nazi aggression, including the Lend-Lease Act in 1941. Furthermore, he helped develop strategies to defeat Germany in Europe through a series of invasions, including the D-Day invasion in 1944. While Roosevelt was diagnosed with polio in 1921 and spent the rest of his days in a wheelchair, he still followed through his political career, with the help of his wife, Eleanor.

Harry S. Truman served as President Roosevelt’s vice president for 82 days before Roosevelt was killed, after which Truman became the 33rd president of the United States. Within the first six months of his term, Truman announced the Germans’ surrender and dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, ending WWII. He guided the U.S in the early stages of the Cold War, and prompted U.S. involvement in the Korean War. Truman eventually stepped out of office in 1953, and died in 1972.

Tojo Hideki was a soldier and statesman, as well as Japan’s prime minister from 1941-1944, during most of the Pacific theatre portion of WWII. An efficient and hardworking bureaucrat, Tojo was one of the most aggressive militarists in Japan, leading his country’s war efforts after the attack at Pearl Harbor. Under his direction, Japan scored victories throughout Southeast Asia and the western Pacific region. However, in 1946, Tojo was tried for war crimes in which he was found guilty, and was executed in Tokyo in 1948.

Crowned prince at age 15, Hirohito was Japan’s longest-reigning emperor, holding the throne from 1926 - 1989. Hirohito’s involvement with Japan’s military in WWII remains debatable, as he had limited influence over the military and politics, and proved to be unenthusiastic about Japan’s participation in the war. He announced Japan’s surrender to the Allied Forces in 1945, and remained an active figure in Japan until his death in 1989.
