mr. dark: his looks may be wrinkly or old. on chapter 39 jim and will assumed that mr. dark and mr. cooger have been alive as long as the carnival has been happening, so they must about/at least a hundred years old. in chapter 35 it said that he held his hand a showed a tattoo of will and jim on his palms. i believe he is strong. the actions that he have done was to try to kidnap jim and will. he in someway takes the pain of others and makes it into his own treat or something like that. luckly, charles halloway helped to free the kids from mr. dark trying to kidnap them and take them to the witch. that shows that he isn't a good guy and he is rather a bad guy in this book. in chapter 35 it said that he held his hand a showed a tattoo of will and jim on his palms.

the police station: "they let the police drop them at two dark houses near the station and they ran up on those porches and grabbed the doorknobs and waited for the prowl car to swing off around the corner into the station, and then they came down and followed and stood looking at the yellow lights of the station all sun-colored at midnight and will glanced over and saw the whole evening come and go in jim's face and jim watching the police station windows as if any moment darkness might fill every room and put the lights out forever." this relates/contributes to the plot by the police station being a setting where jim and will basically escape and they don't want the police to really know who they are so they lied about where they lived and their names. the reason why they were with the police was because miss foley called the police to report jim and will about her missing nephew or to report that mr halloway may be dead. (i don't which one it is)

order vs. chaos: in chapter 5 there is chaos and sort of order. i believe that order vs chaos means that things would start off normal and in a orderly way but then something causes it to turn into a situation, a mess, or into chaos. also in chapter 29 it mentioned that the lightning rod got stolen or it disappeared and the lightning rod is an important object in the book because if you go back to the beginning, the salesman gave will and jim the rod because i think that lighting was going to strike jim's house and they to avoid that they got the rod so it went from order/normal to chaos once it got stolen making a new adventure.

Jim Nightshade-
CHARACTERIZATION-Jim Nightshade has thick, glossy hair that is colored like a chestnut. throughout the book he does many things that show that he may have some kind of death wish. Jim does more action without thinking about it unlike will."His hair was wild, thick, anf the glossy color of waxed chestnuts. His eyes, fixed to some distant point within himself, were mint rock-crystal green"
SETTING-
cigar store:At the cigar store they got an airy feeling and got scared."but will shivered, feeling cold tidal waves of strange rain moving down the prairie as on a deserted shore."
THEME-
end of innocence: according to Charles wills innocence will cause him to be shocked about the bad things that happen but on the other hand Jim already knows that there is evil in the world."Hell,Jim doesn't know with his mind.but his body knows. and while will's putting a bandage on his latest scratch, Jim's ducking, weaving, boucing away from the knockout blow which must inevitably come.

Charles Halloway
CHARACTERIZATION-
A 45 year old man who considers this age old, he longs for the days that he was happy and free, he also mentions that he feels every year of it. in the first few chapters it shows that Charles becomes depressed as this is a characterization, he sees his son grow and be free with Jim and he wishes he was their age again. in chapter 2 will introduces charles by how Jim is attracted to the promising age of the carousel so is Charles , however he wants to be younger not older. towards the end of the book Charles begins to embrace his age and accepts that he is the age he is.
SETTING- the carnival impacted the plot of the story because the carnival is evil and this book is about evil. the carnival gives people temptation to explore the carnival and to do bad things. jim throughout the story is the most tempted to use the carousel after being framed as thieves by miss foley. also charles wish to become younger shows he is tempted by the carousel which is in the carnival. but towards the end people start to realize what the carnival really is and what its about.it is a happy ending

THEME- i think the theme of this book is good v evil. i think this because the evil is the carnival and the good are the characters trine end it. the characters even though they're tempted they go and do good. the carnival just wants to bring people in to put evil in them like this book and tempt them to do bad stuff. the carnival is also evil because it ruins relationships between the families. will and charles relationship is weird because of the carnival and what happened with charles before and with the current events now.

Will Halloway-
Characterization- Two examples of characterization about Will Halloway is that he's much more of a thinker instead of Jim Nightshade (his best friend) who likes action and adventure more. Also, Will Halloway is selfless and will take a lot of risks to save his best friend.
Setting- The library impacted the plot because it was a starting point to where the plot was leading to. It also was a place that danger would be around, but not technically in. It states "No law's been broken, none on the books, anyway. But I feel dead and buried a month. My flesh ripples. Hide, Jim, Will, hide. I'll tell your mothers you've got jobs at the carnival, good excuse for you not coming home. Stay hid until dark, then come to the library at seven". This demonstrates that the library is a planning and thinking place for Charles, Will, and Jim for when danger is right around the corner.
Emerging Themes- I think the theme is lack of contentment (Temptation). It's because in the beginning of the book, it states "I don't need it", said Halloway. But someone inside me does ." Who?" The Boy i once was, thought Halloway, who runs like the leaves down the sidewalk autumn nights. But he couldn't say that". This demonstrates that Charles Halloway didn't accept who he is now at his age and doesn't accept the way he is as a father at all, but kept it to himself. However, it states in Chapter 44, "Old Man...?" Not old! Fifty four's not old, he thought wildly".This states that in this chapter, he finally accepts not only his age, but who he is now in the moment. As he accepts himself in this chapter, when the evil witch tries to stop his heart, he starts giggling and then full on laughing. Which drives the evil Witch away since the witch feeds on fear and not laughter. Laughter is a sense of happiness and that there are better things now in which that's what Charles is subjecting the Witch to as she was trying to stop his heart. As a result, the Witch was burned very badly from Charles Halloway's laughter and new found happiness. Although Charles Halloway being a sad person is not really the most important thing in the story, it showed by the end how Charles finally got to know that the carnival actually feeds off of people who didn't accept who they are.
