Education as Welfare by Barry Goldenberg

In Michael Katz's article in DISSENT MAGAZINE, he argues that public education has been the largest source of welfare through U.S. history. It's provocative argument! And, I think it's an important one as we think about the purpsoe of school *and* potential interventions to all we will talk about moving forward and later in the course. Please fill out the first POLL question and then, post a sticky note regarding the questions around if this is a positive or problematic "thing" about schools.

We think that having welfare be a part of school environments is a good thing, but it is problematic because that seems to be the only option for children to have their physiological and safety needs met. What happens when children are on summer break? What happens on weekends? Children are not students full time, 24/7. They deserve welfare that is separated from their educational pursuits. Children are not just products of the education system. They are humans who need these supports outside of school as well. Because of this, we believe that welfare should take place both inside AND outside of schools.

We think that education is a big source of welfare, it is meant to help students, especially those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. We do think that our schools should be welfare because the education system has become such a huge part of American culture. Even though there are other sources of welfare for children, these government funded programs aren't enough, which leaves schools in charge of this. Things like free and reduced lunch programs, after school programs, and the access to technology that is given to these students play a huge role in how schools are able to give so much to their community.

Schools are often that safe space and considered sanctuaries especially for students in predominant low income areas. If students aren't being provided with the resources at home, it makes it more difficult to succeed and achieve higher education. For example, some parents don't know about resources and therefore schools should be providing this knowledge and support to students. An education doesn't always necessarily mean less crime and social mobility, but it does provide a variety of opportunities through programs. Overall, although schools are not providing that welfare aspect, they should.

Yet we believe that having education under welfare can cause more conflict that will more negatively effect both welfare and education.

We believe that public education being welfare is a good thing because it provides many resources to students (e.g., access to technology, food, and a safe environment) across the country. Public education, being free in itself, is a welfare product since it provides free education and programs to students from several backgrounds. Since we lack equitable opportunities for many groups, we must have institutions like public education to ensure that the playing field is equal to all. Being able to provide these resources and be considered a "welfare" is not a negative thing, rather, it highlights the essential role that public education has in our society.

However, we must be cautious about how we provide this support.
