When I moved back home after Columbia kicked us out in March 2020, my mom and I started going on these 2 miles walks in our neighborhood every day after lunch. I had lived in Arlington my whole life and I never walked that away. We left our house down the bike path, walking towards the McDonalds, crossed George Mason Blvd onto the other bike path, walked past the soccer field, and got dropped off right outside the holiday inn. We’d turn right at the Buffalo Wild Wings and continue down glebe towards the new target and the fancy high rise, where the ted’s Montana grill used to be. just past the nail salon was good company coffee and donuts. We’d get the same order every day: a decaf cappuccino for her, an iced coffee with oat milk for me, and four donuts (not just for us, Jesus): chocolate cake, honey dew, honey dip, sugar raised. 2 cake, 2 yeast.

---------

Katie started working at Good Company just before the Shut Down. That’s what they called it, with the S and D capitalized. Martina had started their barista training on Tuesday, they’d been steaming milk alone on Wednesday, and on Thursday everything seemed to stop. At least for a day or two. Business kept going at Good Company—Katie still had to go into work, anyway, even though all their friends were posting about isolating and social distancing and zoom meetings. It felt weird, unfair sometimes, but good in other ways because they never had to be alone. They were never alone at Good Company, always another person reaching around you and above you and behind you to grab a donut, always someone wearing the same bandana you were wearing rearranging the juice in the fridge

Kosova is my family’s home. When I think about it, i think about corn, family, moderate summers, and wild berries that grow on mountainsides.

I remember one time when my uncle showed me a plum vine that was growing on the walls bordering our neighbor’s house. I grabbed one and bit into it–I’d never had a plum so sweet yet so crisp, with light green inside.

My idea of Kosova was always influenced by my father’s–a country a man. He’d have crappy cassettes that would play folk songs about war and nationalism and I thought everyone was like that. But last time I went, I met a ton of really cool, young queer Albanians, who introduced me to drag in Prishtina, Kosova’s capital, and would play Bjork albums for me.

NARRATIVE
Dona sat on the walls surrounding her family’s farm, staring out onto the mountainside. She sat and waited for her brother to come back from that hill every day since he left. He took the cattle up there a month and a half ago to feed on the lush mountain pasture. The grass that surrounded their plains was all chewed up by the time summer rolled around. Her family pestered her for wasting precious time sitting and waiting when she should be helping her sisters prepare dinner.

Special to me because it’s where my dad’s sister runs a small organic farm. We’ve visited there a few times and it’s such a beautiful property, with lots of fields and forests and greenery. I remember her kitchen too, which was full of artwork and was always a bit messy with things like empty cups of tea and sliced bread out on the counter. The outbuildings were pretty magical as well, one of which is where my aunt did historical research into our family tree. Many special memories playing charades, drinking tea, and laughing with my cousins and family in her old farmhouse.

----
Sylvia has medium-length wavy brown hair. She wears long cotton dresses in the summer with Birkenstocks. She eats only organic food and shops at the local CO-OP. Needless to say, she didn’t vote for Boris Johnson.

Sylvia likes to take her pointer dog on long walks down the beaches near Norfolk. Sometimes, she lets her dog off his leash and he runs around looking for crabs.

- Beatrice Wedd

The sky seems so large, maybe anything's possible? I've been coming to the Plaza every day. The bustle of the jewelry vendors getting their blankets ready every morning is a welcome backdrop. It's cool in the mornings. There's even a hint of moisture, maybe left over from the rains from the afternoon before. The red dirt has a cinnamony, spicy aroma.
