"Percentage of Poor Students in Public School Rises"

“Percentage of Poor Students in Public Schools” by Motoko Rich of New York Times addresses the excess funds of which schools of low-income families require. The article begins by addressing poverty within public schools. It states that of all students attending public school in 2015, over half were receiving free or reduced lunch. The data shows that public schools are educating an increased amount of low-income students. With that, comes students with varying needs such as medical problems, behavioral issues, and additional academic support. With an increase of students of need, our country is failing to provide schools and educators what they need in order to support their education. It’s pivotal that these schools that encompass low-income students are provided with the resources to prepare every student. The lack of funding and resources is alarming because as more districts serve low-income students, there’s concern regarding sufficient funds. (Word Count: 147)
