A CTL that is fully funded and hires enough full-time staff and faculty to ensure that no one is overworked, to keep in line with our value of wellness. A fully funded CTL would allow the director and workers here to have the basic resources they need to be supported in their work.

Staff and Faculty Tutoring

Provide walk-in opportunities where faculty and staff can come in and get support on work being done (think of it as a Faculty and Staff tutoring hour). Some staff may want to have a work space where they can work on their project, like Syllabi, Google Docs, ADA compliance, Studio video, etc. and have a residential expert available.

Adjunct Support

Develop intentional training, day of learning, and/or celebratory opportunities for Adjunct Faculty to join, feel supported, and create that sense of belonging for them too since they (we) tend to be less connected to the campus day-to-day. Invite Residential Faculty and Admin to provide training, keynote speaking, personal stories and experiences, and best practices that can benefit Adj. Faculty be the best they can be for not only themselves but for the students they teach on EMCC's behalf.

Based on what I have seen, it seems like the CTL is focused mostly on the Faculty and faculty needs. If that will be the way it continues, rename it to the Center for Faculty Support.

Going forward, it would be great for the CTL to be more encompassing of its name and offer workshops for staff and students. Most of what I know has been offered to students at the CTL is from workforce development and experiential learning.

The workings of the CTL are unknown. Aside from the workshops they provide and the newsletters they send. Their purpose is vague. It would be great if there were more communication that provided more insight into the purpose of the CTL and what they do. They should be considered a place to go to develop workshops for faculty, staff, and students.

Student Experience Workshops for Faculty & Staff

Rather than having workshops that offer teaching methods and tools to use, it should also be considered to have workshops about the first-gen student and first-gen experience, because that would create an understanding of how to communicate or change methods to truly meet students where they are.

Data on who is served by the CTL would also be helpful to measure if the CTL has truly adjusted its purpose once the new iteration is rolled out.

Rather than having one workshop at a time. Have two of the same workshops on different times and different days in two different weeks to be more accessible with when the workshops are offered.

If a workshop is geared toward staff, then think of the time staff can attend based on the time of year workshops are offered and the time of day.

Google Suite Training for Staff

Whether new staff or staff who have been here for years, the changing and emerging technology will always be a thing to contend with... the many Google-based tools available to staff to use and training on these tools is always a great option and benefit to have available.

Each summer, various departments have retreats for their department. Those retreats could be held at the CTL and could be co-planned with the CTL.

The CTL helps staff and faculty to learn and grow professionally so that together we increase student resilience, well-being, success, and completion.

Having oversight by a review board of sorts, of one Faculty, one Staff, and one staff member who works with students, like CTC, Workforce Development, STEM, or tutoring.

Measuring workshops against goals each year and adjusting if goals are not met or there isn't a balance between faculty and staff.

The CTL is for supporting all faculty and staff in how they teach students and support student learning in other ways.

Professional growth stuff should be secondary or another program/division/office on campus should focus on that.

The CTL is a resource that is available to everyone but is often underutilized. There are a lot of PG opportunities for everyone, but there should be more focus on supporting teaching specifically. And Canvas teaching in particular.

The folks in the CTL have been so incredibly helpful for all things teaching and learning. They provide workshops and individual support. Just because it isn't always utilized doesn't mean they haven't made it available!

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) has sometimes been perceived as focusing primarily on faculty; however, its mission aligns with its name—supporting teaching and learning.

Currently, the CTL is seen as attempting to meet a wide range of expectations: supporting faculty, staff, and students; serving as a hub for professional development; offering opportunities for networking; sharing best practices in teaching; and even functioning as a space for room rentals. To be effective, the college must clearly define and prioritize the CTL’s role.

The central purpose of the CTL should be to support faculty and staff in developing their skills to enhance teaching and promote student learning. Other functions may be valuable additions, but they should not overshadow this primary mission. Professional development opportunities, for example, can be appropriately offered through other departments or offices.
