I got a wonderful trip with family to Chang Son fan - making village last weekend.

For a long time, the Chang Son fan was not only a useful utensil in daily life, but also a beautiful image appearing in many poems, on stage and in the cultural and spiritual life. To make a beautiful and durable fan requires meticulousness and skillfulness from fan makers. Normally, the fan's blades are made from bamboo, which are at least three years old and grow in the middle of a grove.

Moreover, to make fans more durable, the fan makers use joined blades, which have to undergo many stages, such as cutting the bamboo into short pieces, scratching off its green cover, splitting the bark of bamboo and applying a layer of varnish between the slats. Then, they are tied up in a bunch.

After a few months when the layer of varnish is dry, the slats of bamboo are whittled to make the fan blades. Paper to make fans must be do (poonah) or diep (poonah paper covered with egg - shell powder) bought in Dong Ho Village, Bac Ninh Province. Looking at the Chang Son fans, only simple colours, such as green, red, violet and yellow are seen. However, when the fans are unfolded and seen in the light, all the delicate decorative pattern, and designs will appear lively and bright. To foreigners, they can see the characteristics of the Vietnamese people: simple but profound, and beautiful but discreet.

Last weekend, I visited Bat Trang village, an old traditional craft village, with my parents. The village is about 15 kilometers south east of Hanoi center. It is considers as the oldest and most famous pottery village in Vietnam. When visiting here, I had chance to make pottery. I also understand how to make a completed product with three main steps. My parents bought many pottery items to decorate my house. It was really exciting trip.

I write this letter to share with you about my trip to Bat Trang pottery village last week
I went there with my parents and my sister. When i went there, I feel very overwhelmed when i see a lot of kinds of items are displaying on the wall. People said the Bat Trang village was formationed under later le dynasty. In the Nguyen Dynasty, in 1822 Kinh Bac town changed to Bac Ninh town, in 1831 changed to Bac Ninh province, at this time Bat Trang commune belonged to Dong Du canton, Gia Lam district, Thuan An government. In 1862, it was divided into Thuan Thanh government and in 1912 it was divided into Tu Son government. On December 13, 1954, Gia Lam street area was merged (including Gia Lam street, Gia Lam station area, Gia Lam airport, and 6 communes: Hong Tien, Viet Hung, Long Bien, Ngoc Thuy, Thuong Thanh, Progress) of Bac Ninh province into Hanoi. From 1961 up to now, Gia Lam district is on the outskirts of Hanoi capital. Experiencing many historical events, from war to poverty, Bat Trang is still standing village today. The item made in poterry was design delicate. Each item show the sweat and effort of the artist. I was made a pottery in there and feel i like an artist. Only thing make me impressive that is design of the village very ancient and nostalgic
