"The rain came, roaring through the pines. And then, like a bursting Roman candle, a gum tree ahead of us was shattered by a bolt of lightning. When the deafening thunder had died, i heard Doodle cry out, "Brother, Brother, don't leave me! Don't leave me!" (Hurst 3)
As they were heading to Horsehead landing, a terrible storm headed their way. Doodle became terrified so they started home in the middle of the storm. James noticed that every time he increased his speed so would Doodle. He sped up into a run, leaving Doodle behind. As he ran, lightning struck everywhere, but as soon as it had died down he heard Doodle call out in fear.

We were down in Old Woman Swamp. I'm going to teach you to walk, Doodle, I said." He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red. Doodle, Doodle. There was no answer, but the ropy rain. I began to weep, and the tear-blurred vision in red before me looked very familiar. Doodle! I screamed above the pounding storm and threw my body to the earth above his. For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis. (Hurst 4)
After leaving Doodle alone, James starts calling for him hoping he'd answer. Doodle doesn't answer, so he looks around trying to find him. When Doodle was discovered blood was dripping down from his mouth and neck. James noticed the condition of Doodle was severe to the point where his wounds killed him. He realized his mistake and began to weep while holding doodle through the storm.

Characterization (James Hurst)

"Doodle was born when I was seven and was, from the start, a disappointment... Everybody thought he was going to die... I began to weep, and the tear-blurred vision in red before me looked very familiar. Doodle! I screamed above the pounding storm and threw my body to the earth above his. For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis."
James Hurst was a dynamic, indirect, and round character. In the beginning of the story James goes as far as saying Doodle was supposed to be dead. However, by the end James realizes how much he really loves Doodle when he is crying by his lifeless body.

Mama, the doctor, everybody. Oh, yes, you can, Doodle. All you got to do is try. Now come on, and I hauled him up once more."
Doodle was a dynamic, direct, and round character. It seemed that no one around had hope for him. Doodle most likely believed that he would never be able to do anything. He even told James that he can't walk because his mom, doctor, and everyone said. After he begins conquering new challenges, he gains faith in himself.

"It tumbled down through the bleeding tree and landed at our feet with a thud. It's graceful neck jerked twice and then straightened out, and the bird was still. It lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers, and even death could not mar its beauty... He didn't answer so I gently lifted his head. He toppled backward onto the earth. He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained red... I began to weep, and the tear-blurred vision in red before me looked very familiar.'
When James sees Doodles dead body, he notices the physical similarities between Doodle and the scarlet ibis: both of their necks were broken, and red blood of the color scarlet is trickling out of Doodles mouth. In this moment, the scarlet ibis becomes a symbol of death.

"One time i showed him his casket, telling him how we all believed he would die. When I made him touch the casket, he screamed."
There is a reason why Doodle is so reluctant to reach out and touch the casket that was built for him as a baby, when James brings to the barn and tries to force him to. The casket is a symbol for the death that Doodle evaded, and he fears that if he physically connects with it, he is inviting death back into his life.

Doodle is born a very sickly child, whom no one expects to live and whom James feels a tremendous amount of shame. James wanted someone who could run and play with, instead he got the fragile Doodle. James over time became annoyed by pulling him everywhere that he decided to teach him to walk. Due to lack of motivation throughout his whole life, he believes he cannot do anything and is just a burden. James convinces him to practice at home and succeeded after time. James also started teaching Doodle to swim and run at Horsehead Landing. One day as they were Eating lunch, coming from the yard was a strange croaking noise. A bleeding bird came out in the yard with its neck broken and lied dead on the ground. As soon as they finished eating, they hurried off to Horsehead Landing for Doodles lesson. When they reached their destination a powerful storm came upon them which frightened both brothers and cause them to flee in a hurry. James noticed when ever he would increase in speed so would Doodle, so he started from a walk to a run ignoring doodles begs and left him behind. James did not stop until he was unable to hear Doodles call outs. He finally came out to a stop and waited for his callings or himself, but nothing happened just rain fall. James began searching for Doodle and soon found him under a red nightshade bush. James called out to Doodle but got no reply, so he went to lift his head. Upon lifting his head blood was rushing out of his mouth and neck as his lifeless body fell backward onto the earth. He began weeping regretfully while tightly holding Doodle for a long period of time as he envisioned a similar scene he had seen before,he scarlet ibis.
