Quote Response #1: "During the spring of his junior year, Don moved in with one of his grandparents while his dad went to a clinic for alcohol rehabilitation. It was difficult to watch his dad try to pull himself through, but he was glad he had football" (83).

The relationship between Don Billingsley and his father Charlie really makes me appreciate my relationship with my dad. Charlie was a star running back at his son's high school and high school wee described to be the best times of his life. After school, his life was pretty sad, dinking like crazy and having relationships with many women. Once he had a son, he wanted him to play football so he could relive his glory days. When analyzing their relationship, I just feel thankful that my father doesn't push me to live through me.

Quote Response #2: "Once the plan was announced, a hotly debated aspect of it wasn't curriculum, or how minorities would fare in schools that are predominately white. Instead, there was remarkable focus on which school, Permian or Odessa, would get the greater number of black students, and hereby the greater number of black football players" (105).

The way the author describes this process makes the African-American students seem like solely athletes and I think that is his purpose. These communities don't view them as kids, they view them as improvements to their names Since Texas high school football is so competitive, schools are willing to fight for the opportunity to obtain these athletes when a local school goes belly up.
