I broke a pane of glass and painted different badges that were worn by the different types of people that were persecuted by Nazis. I then made a clay person to stand in the middle of the glass looking down on the badges, representing our class looking back remembering the Holocaust and everyone who suffered because of it. It also relates to the Auschwitz memorial in Amsterdam which is a pane of broken glass so that when you look down it represents how broken people are after being at Auschwitz. My piece is also broken glass and when the clay figure looks down they are partially broken learning about the horrid events that happened.

I did save people from seeing dead bodies and blood becuase I assumed school wouldn’t let me add that to the project. I chose to do a diorama of the battlefield because people can get a visual of what it looks like by showing, not telling. I made a cardboard platform with a trench through the side of it, with chopped up popsicle sticks to create planks for the walling. I also made a wrecked building with cardboard and toothpicks to make the frame and the look of it being bombed/destroyed. I also added a fire to the inside to give out the idea that war is constant. I also painted everything a dirt color to get the idea out of battlefields being the land of the dead. No living plants. Just dirt, wreck, and smoke with the constant fire and explosions in the background. The main idea that people should get out of the project is that when war is happening, it is constant. No breaks, just fire and death.

In the scene, there are rows and rows of train cars covered in snow, with the caption telling the reader how many of the trains were never opened, just leaving the Jews trapped inside to all slowly die in the overfilled cars. This scene left a big impact on me. It was really shocking and impactful to see the horror and the randomness of the holocaust in such a brutal way. I picked to represent this event with a clay monument because I think that a 3-D visual representation would show what it was like in more detail. To create the monument, I shaped all of the individual parts and train tracks out of clay and then put them together, adding white paint on the top of the train cars to represent snow. I decided to add as many train cars as I could to the monument to show the sheer scale of the holocaust. After looking at the monument, I hope that readers will have a better understanding of the atrocities of the holocaust and exactly what was happening. If more people understand the true horrors of the holocaust that would help insure that an event like the holocaust would never happen again.

I tried my best to recreate the Auschwitz gates including the German writing "Arbeit Macht Frei" which means, "Work sets you free". I then created 6 broken hearts out of clay, painted them red, and laid them in and around the gates. I picked the number 6 because of how much importance it has on Jewish culture and history. For example, 6 million Jews died in camps, the 6 major death camps, and of course, the 6 points in the Star of David. The hearts are broken because of how permanently scarred you would be IF you made it out of the camps alive. In concentration camps, Jews that had no food let alone the ability to cook wrote down and shared their recipes so that they wouldn't be forgotten. Because the victim’s recipes were never cooked in the camps, I feel that sharing them now is honoring them. In my opinion, Jewish food is the best kind of food one can eat. Jewish food may be so tasty because Holocaust survivors didn’t have any food in the camps and thus put an emphasis on food. The dish I made was a blintz filled with creamy cheese and topped with a sweet strawberry sauce. The recipe I used was a Holocaust survivor’s. I hope that the rich crepes remind us that we are lucky to have the food.

There, she meets a group of people who have been used as an experiment to help German soldiers. This experiment entailed cutting pieces of bone out from these girls' legs and using them to heal soldiers' broken ones. In this story, while in the camp, they try to spread the information about the experiment and the horrors they have faced. I chose a paper airplane to represent this “message to the world” idea because it is a symbol for sending messages and transportation. Typed on the paper used to make the airplane are all 74 of the young girls' names who were operated on. The stand that it is sitting on says “Rabbits 74” which incorporates both the nickname of this group and the number of them that were operated on. Finally the base is a collage of pictures. Some of the pictures are x-rays of their legs and some are of them at the camp. I choose to make a sculpture/physical memorial as my project because since the book is all words I wanted to create a type of visual representation. The overarching goal of my project is to continue to spread the Rabbits message and educate people about them because these experiments are constantly left out of conversations about the holocaust. On top of this one there were also many more horrific medical experiments which people should continue to research because they all are a part of the many terrible actions in the holocaust.

How Jews were treated went beyond what is even comprehensible in the mind of a modern day american. I think that the violence is important to learn about to honor the people killed that night. But also to make sure it never happens again. This is also a remembrance of the lives that only fate and a will to survive could have saved. The scissors cutting the thread of fate represent how Jews were persicuted, murdered, beaten, seperated from their families and put in concentration camps by Nazis and that they had no control over any of it and they were helpless. Except of course the few that resisted. But if they did they were probably murdered. The broken glass represents what really happened that night and how countless businesses and lives were ruined instantaneously. And how their windows were smashed. One poem can’t change the world, but it can influence it for the better. And I hope it does the job I intended it to. The final line, “Now you decide” I left open ended in the hopes that you as the reader would fill it in. I thought of it as almost placing the blame, on the gates maybe, would not encompass the horrors that went on in death camps. One Nazi known as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg was the individual who executed the attempt to kill Hitler like we learn in class. Before Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg was hired to assassinate Hitler he was severely injured in a battle and lost his left eye and right hand. This was something new I learned in this movie. Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg was killed the same day he attempted to kill Hitler. I would recommend this film because it is engaging and has a shocking ending. I do not think the violence in this film is that bad and if you're very interested in Von Stauffenberg’s history you should definitely watch it. I thought this was important because although there are already memorials to them in existence, I felt it important to express the hope they must have carried to get through something so drastic for the amount of time they did. I chose to do a monument instead of a written piece because I thought it would express more emotions and convey thoughts to a viewer more, along with being something I’m more comfortable making. To make this monument, I mixed paints to make a pink-ish red and painted a jar with it. I next shattered the jar into small pieces with a screwdriver along with Sadie’s help. This was very tricky as I was trying to get the pieces to look like petals, but you can never exactly control the way glass shatters. Eventually, I got enough pieces to form a flower, by making rings inside of rings to simulate layers. Then, I glued them down to a base of black construction paper. Next, I found some wire and twisted it to look like a stem. The wire represents the walls of concentration camps, and the way that the feeling of being trapped grew in the prisoners there. I painted the wire green and laid it out on the black concrete paper to finish my monument. I hope a viewer can understand that even in the most dire of circumstances and the most trying of times, hope will always be with you.

In Bob Pringle’s recorded lecture about his experience in the Holocaust, he says that lavender reminds him of death. He goes on to explain that this is because of two things, firstly because the scent of death is like an overpowering sweet, and secondly because of the color of the uniforms worn by Jews in death camps. The artist has made this piece in memorial of those who died in death camps. The Scent Of Death is seen as a lavender colored Jar. on the outside, a black blaque with the Hebrew word for “Death.” On the inside is a bed of cotton and lavender, topped with a single candle. The significance of the candle is that it represents the crematoriums in the death camps. As you open the jar and smell the lavender, you are experiencing death. You are invited to stop and smell the flowers.

This monument is to ensure that we never forget the lives that these children never got to live. I chose to sculpt childrens shoes, accurate of the time of the 1940s. The inspiration came from looking at pictures of the monstrous piles of shoes at Auschwitz. In one picture, at the top of the pile, there was a pair of shoes for a small child. It is difficult knowing that whoever that pair of shoes belonged to, was most likely murdered, so I wanted to commemorate that person and all the others who never had the chance to live through childhood.

This piece shows the importance of displaying how nothing was ever as it seemed at the time and anything that was good in your life was always evolving. This concept that I had in my head and my hands connected with ease to create this piece. I knew that I wanted to do artwork and messages to help me in the making of this piece because I felt that any sort of writing would have been too vague to help me bring this art alive. If you look very closely at the messages on the frame you will see that each one starts with the two words “what was” to help show you that everything little thing you can think of was not the same as before Nazis took power and Jews were sent to camps. One of the two drawings that are included within the frame show a stable ribcage with animated, bright lavender floating around it and the word “stable” in Hebrew. The next drawing has the word “gone” in Hebrew and shows lavender that is now deceased and brown as well as the remains of the rib cage lying in the right corner. Lavender striped clothing was a very sentimental piece of clothing that Jewish people wore in concentration camps. I decided that this element would have added an aspect of evolution by showing a fully formed ribcage evolving into the lavender clothing that shows the only remains of a person. I purposely went with a simple frame with messages and drawings to let you use your imagination to interpret it however your brain desires. With that, one message I really want to leave you with is that evolution can be scary and not as glorified as it seems. While changing can be very exciting it is very important to recognize the dark roots of evolving in Jewish history. Jewish people only got to experience the evolution that is life becoming death, happiness becoming trauma, and stableness evolving into your life being gone.

For my final project I decided to make a piece of art that represents Death Camps and the destruction of Jewish life and culture. I picked this topic because it was something that stood out to me during the course. I picked art because I felt like I could express the topic in more ways. My project is a piece of cardboard painted with white and lavender stripes like the stripes on the concentration camp uniforms, on the painted cardboard there is a quote that says “Forgetting extermination is part of extermination” i chose this quote because I really feel like it fit a lot of what we learned about, in the course. Around the quote are the numbers that were tattooed on the people in the concentration camps, and there is broken glass on top of that. I want people to look at this and understand that my project has many different messages in it. The broken glass is for Kristallnacht, the numbers are for the victims of concentration camps, the stripes also for the victims of concentration camps, and the quote is about never forgetting the holocaust.

At the start of the film we see Oskar Schindler trying to make money off of the Jews in Krakow ghetto. He is starting an enamel ware factory outside the ghetto and he appoints a Jew as the manager. As we get to know Oskar more we can see that he is clearly not a good person. He cares only for money and women. it goes on like this until one day the liquidation of the ghetto happens and the Nazis go through the ghetto taking the belongings and lives of the Jews living there. It is an intense and gory scene and as Oskar watches from a hilltop outside the ghetto he sees a little girl in red. It is at this point that he starts to have a change in heart. He begins to welcome Jews that are not considered essential workers into his factory because if you are not an essential worker you get sent to Auschwitz. he begins to stop caring for money and instead spends it on his workers. They have all become sort of a family. But then they are all ordered to be sent to Auschwitz and while the old Oskar would have just let them go to their death, the new Oskar does everything in his power to save them. He starts a new factory which will create weapons and ammunition. He and the manager of his factory write a list of 1200 people which would be sent to Auschwitz that will instead come work at his new factory. He spent every single mark getting back and it cost him. By the end of the war he had gone from being a millionaire to having nothing.

This was an amazing and intense movie. there were many graphic scenes that depicted what it was like in the concentration camps. There was considerable blood and death but I think it was necessary to show just how horrific it was. A part that really stood out to me was when a a kid was running through a concentration camp trying to hide and every time he finds a place its already taken. He looks everywhere until he eventually has to jump down through the toilets only too find that that is taken too. I would recommend this film to anyone over the age of 14 because its really gory and violent. If you are studying the Holocaust and have background information, younger people could handle it, but if this is the first introduction to the topic, it is potentially too much for younger viewers. We chose to create an art piece because we like how art is relative and that everyone can have their own perception of what the art piece means. This project involved lots of clay, glue, paint and tissue paper to create the full art piece. The base of our project is a piece of wood that we painted to look like cobblestones that would have covered the streets, with some Stars of David scattered on the ground because the Nazis made Jewish citizens wear them and painted them on doors and shop windows, surrounded by lavender with inspiration taken from Bob Pringle, and shattered broken glass on top to really cement the symbolism of Kristallnacht. The trickies thing to make was the lavender flowers because they were so time consuming. We really hope that this monument will make sure that the holocaust and all of the horrible acts of Anti-Semetism will never be forgotten.

But if you were a kid living through WW2 the end of the track is worse than you can imagine. The first stop for a German child would be the normal child activities such as screaming as loud as you can while shattering everyone's eardrums and playing with toy trains. But as I said, this track ends in a way you can not imagine and you won't want to see a train again after this. After a few stops and the child gets older they soak in what is going on around them and learn from the things they see and when you are in a war the only things you can learn are bad ones. The German children witnessed anti-semitism everyday so they were influenced by that thinking that its ok to be anti-semitic. Next stop would be joining the HJ (The Hitler Youth Group) which is a group that the majority of German youth joined. Being surrounded by people teaching anti-semitism makes the children feel as though its acceptable to treat Jewish people badly. A little while longer on the track of life and the child would probably be committing some anti-semitic acts and several German teens participated in Kristallnacht which was a night where several anti-Jewish progroms happened. Years would pass and the kid would now be an adult and most likely be part of the Nazi party and working as a soldier or a guard at concentration camps or ghettos where Nazis forced Jews to and work to the bone. And finally they might be working at some of the worst concentration camps through all of WW2 such as Auschwitz or Dachau. These camps are the ones where thousands of Jews were taken to by cramped dirty train with nothing to eat or drink and all of that just to be killed. In Dachau a train arrived and the Nazis killed everyone who was in the cramped 30 car train. Thousands of Jews were killed and these Nazi Soldiers that started off as the fun loving kids who played with toy trains are the ones who did it. This poster made me really think about the lives that were lost during WW2 and how lucky I am to not live in the middle of a war. I hope you understand that the impact people have on each other can end in unimaginable outcomes so it really is important to treat people with kindness and ensure that the future generations do the same. I picked this topic because I felt it was important to educate people so we can make sure the future generations are taught to only love people and treat them well.

The recipe came from a Holocaust survivor, Thea Riesel. This is the recipe she used to have as a kid, and now she makes them for her family. When Jews were in concentration camps, they had barely any food. Many people wrote down recipes for food that they missed and these recipes were found years later. I chose to make latkes because I eat them every year at Hanukkah, and also because they taste amazing! Potato pancakes also showed up in Friedrich, so I thought they would be fun to make. I think that cooking recipes from Holocaust survivors honors them, and I think in a way it keeps them alive. It shows a pile of dead bodies in front of Auschwitz, which is a famous death camp from the holocaust. The bodies look like they’ve been scattered into a pile which symbolizes how Jews were treated like pieces of trash. On the gates of Auschwitz it says “Arbeit Macht Frei” which means “Work sets you free” in German. Many people died in Auschwitz and the people who survived only lived because they managed to hide and not get caught. The bodies in front of the sign show that the words on the gate were a lie and the victims were going to die no matter what. I chose to do this drawing for my final project because I think it is important to remember how many people were beaten up and murdered in concentration camps so we can teach people to never let something like the holocaust happen again.
