Shortages that has happened in China are caused by the
worsening overpopulation. One of their biggest challenges is the amount of food the have to feed these millions of people. The Chinese are working on a "zero population growth", where the number of people born a year are equal to the number of people who die.

Many geographers describe China's landscape as a "Giant Slope" because of the very different landscapes there like plateaus, mountains, hills, and deserts.
China became the first country to have 1 billion people and the birth rate in China is more than its death rate. Over the years its population has doubled to 1.1 billion.

One of China's most important leader Mao Zedong, believed that large families would make China stronger. When he ruled he brought the natural rate of growing families to about 3%. He launched a program later on called Great Leap Forward, to help provide more jobs for the population by using technology. The people of China were told to burn anything metal so it could increase the steel production. After his death, the government came up with a family planning program called the "one child policy". At first families were punished but now they are rewarded for only having one child with money. This policy has caused many disagreements because it goes against some of the families traditions and religions. Another problem was caused because most parents wanted boys because they would take the family name. They have found a way to find out the gender before the end of the pregnancy and some would choose to stop the pregnancy and try to have a boy.

China uses power plants that to supply energy but there are toxic chemicals that come from them. China is the second largest consumption of energy in the world and diseases related to polluted are are one of the most causes of death. They have now come up with an idea called hydroelectric dams in the Yangtze River to produce clean energy and prevent floods. When the government went to build these dams, there were houses and families with farmland were forced to leave their homes. Another risk was the species in the river were becoming endangered because of their loss of habitat.

China has used a things like tech fairs so inventions can be created to help promote technology. When Mao was in charge he created another policy to keep the country self sufficient. But he wanted to control their jobs and they were punished if they did not do the jobs they were told to do. New leader took charge and stated buying and using things from different countries. Even though the countries wanted more freedom to start their businesses in China. Which they fixed by putting in special economic zones. This has helped create many jobs for the people in China.

China's population rate is going to slowly increase throughout the years and by 2050 it will increase by 2.5 billion. If China gets better health care it could help decrease the amount of infants that die. Women in China who are not educated usually marry young but if China starts helping young women get educated, the women usually put off marriage and children to focus more on their jobs.
