Connect Team Reflection #2 by Dani White

A few of you have been making changes to the original schedules to meet the needs of the students in your intervention groups. What changes have you made or need to make to insure that the students grasp the concepts that you are presenting? What more can Mrs. White do to help support your intervention time?

I have found that the smaller the group, the more success my students are having when it comes to grasping the concept taught. I am splitting my 3 groups up into 6 groups. I will see each group 10 minutes each and focus on intensive intervention with the given concept. This cuts out the time that is taken by behavior management of the larger group, and allows more individualized instruction. Mrs. White has been very timely with distributing instructional materials so that we always have plenty to work with. Professional Development during our Connect PLC in our intervention areas, is a great asset for Connect teachers that will allow us, in return, to more effectively reach our students. Overall, I feel supported and enabled to give my students the high quality instruction that they need during intervention groups.

I love working with the kindergarten group. They are receptive and being able to have them in a small group is much more effective with learning the basic concepts of Letter Land. Ms. White provided all the materials that I need to conduct successful small group activities. She is very helpful when I need to ask questions about instruction. The only change that I have made so far is allowing the students to play a card game with the letters to increase their knowledge base. They enjoy the activity and I enjoy the rapport with the students.

I have made changes to my groups to better accommodate the teacher and the schedules they currently have with their students. I have noticed that some kids work better with others and also some have progressed and may not need the intervention at the time. Ms White has been very helpful in providing the materials and strategies I need to better serve the students I am working with.

I have changed some of my groups because some of my students were with other teachers at the time they were supposed to be with me. The students are doing a great job and their improvement is evident. I started this week by adding some P.E. activities with my lessons. For example if they pronounce a word correctly that student is allowed to take a shot on the basketball goal. It has improved their focus. Mrs. White has weekly updated my activities and has been very helpful.

I have been working with first and second grade nurture groups. I divided my second grade group into two smaller groups because of levels and student number. The first grade read Rapunzel and then read a play called Rafunzel. Second graders were able to do a lesson building a catapult and launching cotton balls and candy pumpkins with Mrs. Benton. Students are able to increase their knowledge and thinking skills by being afforded higher level lessons.
