In 1928, Alexander was putting away Petri dishes full of bacteria when one made him stop and think. Mold was growing on this one Petri dish, and around the mold, the bacteria had been killed. After testing the mold, he found out it was part of the penicillium family, the penicillium notatum in particular. Fleming presented his findings in 1929, but they didn't really get anywhere.. He published a report on penicillin and its potential uses in the British Journal of Experimental Pathology.

In 1935, Howard became professor of pathology at Oxford University where he had access to a laboratory.
Florey then hired Ernest Chain. Chain was working on cancer research, and he happened to notice Fleming's article on penicillin. (visit "Ernst Chain" for a continuation).
Florey then travelled to Illinois with another researcher. There, they discoverd how agriculture could help. Penicillin grew inside corn. Since corn hadn't grown much in Britain, they didn't know a lot about it. After further testing, the penicillin grew 500 times more than before. By the time WWII ended, U.S. companies were making 650 million units a month.
