LADY MADELINE: Madeline is the sister of the protagonist (Roderick Usher), and as the story describes between them there is a very strong fraternal connection (they are twins), which makes Madeline's death very painful for Roderick, to the point of leading to his death. In the story he is described as a ghost "Lady Madeline passed slowly through a place apart from the chamber and, without noticing my presence, disappeared".

She suffered a strange illness; which led to her death, but she is not buried because of her brother's fear of burying her, but this causes her to appear at the end of the story and Roderick dies of fright.

In this story, we can see the gothic approach since the fact that there is always this quiet and mysterious environment that is surrounding the house and characters. Besides, the supernatural elements that the story wants to portray. Another aspect is that everything is dying and decaying (house and characters).

On the other hand, we could relate Irene (and also her brother) to a mental illness. Why not think that everything they experienced in this house was part of the characters' imagination. There is the possibility that everything was fine with the house, but something strange happened with her brother and Irene's mind. We would say that they simply had a mental illness and imagined everything. That could be the author's intention.

Madeline is pictured as a fragile and enigmatic character. She is mostly silent and passive throughout the story, contributing to the mistery of the text.

Relationships with other characters:

Madeline's main relationship is with her brother, Roderick Usher. As twins, they share an inexplicable bond that goes beyond the conventional sibling relationship. Their relationship becomes in a psychological and supernatural bond in a gloomy way. Also, she became in a victim of his bother when apparently got put in a coffin still alived.

Relationship with the Gothic and Psychoanalysis:

Madeline's character pictures gothic elemnts trhough her gloomy presence, the fact that she can be perceived as a ghost representing the supernatural or as a "death person alive" depending on the moment of the story, her charater cross the lines between life and death and the helath or ill mind.

Regarding the psychoanalytic perspective, Madeline's character can be seen as representing repressed elements such as sickness and the return of repressed emotions or traumas (each time she apperas after we think she is death).

In terms of personality, Usher is very enigmatic and has acute sensory experiences which contributes a lot to the gloomy atmosphere of the house. He has a close an unusual relationship with Madeline, his sister, and a weird relationship with the narrator.

Now, in relationship with the gothic and the psychoanalysis, Usher represents mental and physical decadence, and his presence creates an atmosphere of madness that blurs the line between the reality and the supernatural.

Personality:

The sister is observed to be a little conservative, but generous person. She tries to maintain the legacy of her parents and keep the house in the best way, it is seen that she is a responsible woman and that she is attached to the past.

Relationships with other characters:

Her relationship is with her brother, as they both reside in the same house that was their parents. They maintain a strong bond and it progresses as events unfold with the entity in the house.

Relation to the Gothic or psychoanalysis:

The house can be said to be another character, as it takes on the characteristics of a gothic place, as well as the entity inside. The brothers cannot fight against this, since it is something intangible and what it provokes is fear and frustration.

Irene (The Sister)

Personality:

She is quiet, she gives her opinion only when necessary but does not reflect critical opinions or opinions that give a point of view, but only speaks when she must. Her brother has dominion over her and equates her. She is kind and submissive, she spends her time knitting. She is afraid of the house and the noises inside it.

Relationships with other characters:

She has a loving relationship with her brother, but not as a family, marital. She rejected other boyfriends or suitors to stay with her brother. They share household chores, without contradicting them. Her relationship with her family seems to be bad, in my opinion the sounds are from her dead relatives who judge them for having the relationship she has with her brother.

Relation to the Gothic or psychoanalysis:

In Gothic literature, women are usually shown as submissive, charming who need the help or protection of a man. In this text we can see it with Irene, she is saved or accompanied by her brother, she is not a person who is independent and strong, but rather submissive and dependent on her brother. Also the feeling of guilt, she has that feeling by acting crestfallen, by being silent and never giving an opinion, only dedicating herself to knitting, in my opinion she may feel guilt about the relationship with her brother and tries to follow a role that according to her is the one that corresponds.
