Takeout Delivery Person

The picture on top depicts a common takeout delivery job in China. Drivers suited in yellow are working under a platform named Mei Tuan for delivering food. On the street, we can often see them working and delivering food. However, what is usually common is that these drivers are usually male. According to Peng Pai News, there are around 90% of male drivers in the industry of takeout delivery. Due to gender stereotypes that males are physically more masculine and stronger than women, women are seen as ones who can't accomplish the same amount of work as men in this industry.

Taxi Driver

In the picture, a male taxi driver is working on a street. Taxi drivers or Didi drivers are a very developed industry in China. What is common is that male shows dominance in the ratio of this industry as well. According to Didi's official database, there are 92.6% of male Didi drivers and only 7.4% of female drivers. This phenomenon is present because many of the population assume that taxi or Didi drivers are constantly encountering strangers and there are risks of them getting hurt. This boosts the male population especially the middle-aged male population in this industry, as they are seen as the ones more masculine and more capable.

Chef

The picture shows a chef cooking in a Japanese food Restaurant. Chef is an extremely common career in China, however, similar to many other industries, the ratio of male and female genders is in severe disbalance. As shown, the chef is a male chef, and according to a survey done in 2020 of 4000 chefs in China, only 327 of them appeared to be female, which is around 8%. The disbalance can be caused by various reasons, however, mainly gender stereotypes of men being more capable of handling hard tasks or them being sturdy caused this imbalance. Being a chef requires stamina to handle the kitchen, work under high temperatures, and sturdy cooking skills.......etc. Due to gender stereotypes, the male gender is seen as the one more suitable for this workplace.

Bus Driver

The picture depicts a bus driver on the street. Bus drivers are another very popular career in China. Similar to other careers shown, bus driver is a career where male dominates. A survey done of around 3200 bus drivers shows that only 76 of them are female bus drivers, only 2.36 percent. Even at school, school bus drivers are almost always male drivers. This leads to another stereotypical phenomenon presence in China. A lot of the time in China, female drivers are labeled as drivers who are incapable of following traffic rules and often cause accidents. This has led to the dominance of male drivers in the bus drivers industry.

Toilet Signs

The toilet sign is written "Men to the left because women are always right!". The toilet sign appeared to my sight in a Cinema near my house, the design of the Cinema appeared to be new and innovative. This quote emphasizes the position women have had in history. Men oppressed women on suffrage rights, education rights, employment rights...... Over the long process of women trying to gain their rights back in history through marching, negotiation, speech, meetings...... Nowadays, women are in a position way better than where they were years ago. This quote rather than states a fact, but more reminds us of the hardship women went through. However, sarcastically the actual women's bathroom is on the left side and the men's is on the right, probably due to design errors.

Security Staff

The picture, it is showing a security staff sitting beside the bushes resting. Security staff is a career very common in China. However, what is also true is that security staff are almost always jobs for males. Take our school as an example, the guards or the security staff members are all males. According to data reports by many security guard companies, there are only a few female workers in their company. This is a show of gender stereotypes and gender constructs. The male gender is seen as the one with higher stamina and more physical strength, thus, the one more capable of securing the place. The female gender is seen as the gender weaker and with biological inconvenience, thus, the one incapable of handling securing tasks.

Metro Driver

The picture shows a metro driver working at the Shanghai Metro Station. Metro or subway driver is another career where male dominance is present. According to an interview with a worker Wu Ya employed at Wuhan Metro Company, among the 2000 metro drivers in the company, there are only 6 female metro drivers. Wu Ya herself is a female metro driver, she thinks that females can accomplish the same job as male metro drivers, on top of that she thinks she can finish tasks with more patience compared to men. The dominance of males in this industry is due to the conventional idea that males have more stamina and they are more durable even working over-nights. Despite these ideas, people like Wu Ya still manage to accomplish her duty of being a metro driver. People like Wu Ya are evident examples of how females despite their physical disadvantages can still do work males do.

Sanitation worker

The picture shows a female sanitation worker working on the street. It is also very common for males to work as a sanitation worker. However, in the sanitation or cleaning industry, females overtake the male population. Talking from a more specific perspective, in the janitor or the "ayi" career, female workers dominate the industry. According to research conducted on the janitors in Shanghai, 98% of the janitors are women and only 2% are men. Additionally, 94% of the employers prefer women janitors. This brings into the gender constructs that women are more suitable for domestic labor. This gender construct was caused by the Industrial Revolution, where the female was seen as the weaker and incapable group and was put to work in domestic environments. However, this does not mean that females should always work in domestic places.

Truck Driver

The picture shows a truck driver driving on the street, while on the same street, there are several other trucks as well, all drivers driving the truck were male. According to a data report released in 2020, there are only 4.2% of female truck drivers in the population of the truck driver. This leads to a question about this phenomenon - Why are many truck drivers in China male? The first point is biological differences, periods and pregnancy for women can all cause slowed paces in driving or even lack of attention while driving. Second, long-distance driving seems very difficult for women, for example, many say men can do their "business" in the bushes along the road, while females cannot. Third, women in China are more seen as the group doing domestic labor, such as taking care of their children, long-distance driving away from their house wasn't welcomed for females. Despite all these difficulties, it does not mean that women are incapable of being truck drivers or incapable of handling hardship. Also, as more developed trucks are introduced nowadays, there are more females involved in the truck driving industry.

Leon with Long Hair

Leon is one of my BEST FRIENDS! A story he mentioned recently is at his school, he was told by a Spanish girl (no offense) to cut his hair short. In the picture, as you can see Leon grows long hair. This brings up an interesting topic, why is male hair usually short, and the female's long? While I have seen boys with long hair like Leon and girls with short hair like Emma, this is not a common thing. This is due to gender stereotypes affected by the Industrial Revolution, males had to make their hair short due to them working in dirty environments, which made them prioritize convenience over their hair. However, in modern society there should be freedom for fashion, no one should be judged on their appearence and fahshion.
