Unfortunately for Lee, his battle plans were found in an old encampment in Maryland and under the command of General George McClellan, Union forces attacked Lee on Sep. 17. Dispute the Confederates being outnumbered, the indecisiveness of McClellan led to reinforcements of the South through Jackson and A.P., evening the odds. In the end 22,000 casualties were the result and the Union was deemed victorious as the Confederates retreated on the 19th.
