As a teacher I experience everyday the important impact school and society have on migrants in the school. The first problem we teachers have to face is the language, the choice of English as common ground for students coming from diverse cultural and social background. A little help from community organisation is fundamental to achieve the goal to contribute to students cultural and spiritual growth.

I totally subscribe to Dr. Pant's point of view. Refugees integration is a great opportunity for every country involved and specifically talking about education schools can play an important role in bridging the cultural gap between different race and individuality. Newly arrived migrants in school must be helped to express their precious personality and human value so teachers and all the school staff should work together to encourage and support the whole process of human growth.

In my school we have students coming from the Maghreb area who scarcely speak italian, they follow regular classes in the morning but a few hours are devoted everyday to the study of Italian with a school teacher who gives the basic notions in order to let the newcomers express themselves and complete teachers'assignememts.

As a teacher in a secondary school I work with students migrating from other countries for economical problems, only few of them are refugees. They do not speak good Italian that's why the school staff supports teachers with mother tongue speakers who are involved in Italian crash courses to allow students to understand the new langaguage and then interact with other students in regular classes. Some interesting projects are also set up such as the one centered upon the school gardens maintenance which motivates newcomers to be a part of the school making them feel welcome and appreciated. Another helpful means to let migrating students settle into their new reality is a psychological aid offered by the school, students and their family can contact psychologists in order to talk about their previous life, their fears and the hope for a better tomorrow. My school is very sensitive about the matter of newly arrived students and provides us teachers with all the necessary aid to face the challenge of rethinking education and brotherhood in general.

I found the RespeAct project really interesting and motivating for newly arrived migrants students in the classrooms. We have something like that in our school as we participate with the local community in a project called 'Migrantes liberi' which helps newcomers to face a new reality in a new country, they are given every kind of support from food, hosting service to clothes and first of all education , we strive to make them aware of the possibilities and chances they can get inside the school and in the outside world. They can choose different courses like foreign languages or cooking skills, or simply sports, this will make them feel more than welcome in the community making it easier for them to know new friends among local people. It's such a profitable experience for both the migrants and the local people who learn how to be respectful of other individuals getting a better understanding of others lives around the world.

Preparing for newly arriving students is crucial for the school and for us teachers. I really agree with Erika when she says that is of the utmost importance making them feel appreciated and welcome. Refugees or simply migrant students are a resource for the whole class they can share their stories and their special background to the class so every single student can be enriched by this experience and become a better person. As Erika stresses every new student deserve great respect in the classroom and teachers should NEVER permit them to become the object of ridicule, The teacher is a role model so if he shows freat respect the students will follow.

Having to work with students coming from other countries I have experencied some problems at the beginning. As a teacher when I found myself dealing with some students migrating from Romania I had the problem to interact with them to fully integrate them in the classes where Italian was spoken. Fortunately the organisation my school collaborate with 'Migrantes Liberi' has interpreters and psychological aid for the newcomers so they made us easier to make them feel happy and welcome in regular classes. All the Italian students felt a great empathy towards them which made my task as a teacher easier and highly motivating. Anyway the school management is always there ready to face the newly arrived students problems and is always willing to lend a helping hand when it is necessary.

When it comes to teaching creativity is a must. I often try to invent or choose tailor-suited activities to arouse students' interest. An activity I have often tried with newly arrived students to improve their command of Italian is a word game where they are given images of something in english and they have to guess or look up the italian translation on the vocabulary, afterwards the are asked to create a simple sentence with a word of their choice either in English or their native language and then with the aid of the internet or online vocabularies try to understand the meaning. The same game can be done with traditional songs from their countries all the group class tries to guess the meaning of the words while they learn to pronounce them by singing.

I do really agree with Nora when she says that language barriers are not difficult to be broken. It is simple for migrant students to learn the language of the host countries because they are curious about habits and cultural peculiarity of the new country. The idea of taking them outdoor for a walk or a visit in town is fantastic, they can easily learn from signs, shopping ads, or just asking directions or entering shops. it's the best way to get them involved so they can learn without studying books or concentrate on educational tools.

I found really interesting the sports games proposed by Jana, as a matter of fact it is important to create a trusting feeling between students and this is even truer when we refer to newly arrived students. Sports can promote the idea of belonging to a team, to a group of friendly people and even if students speak different languages the language of sports is a mondial transfert able to make barriers fall down and open to brotherhood and mutual understanding. I have never tried Jana's games at school but I really think I will do, I will use sports games to promote the basic idea of integration among students so that they can see themselves as members of a powerful team able to overcome every challenges in life.
