Face-to-face learning is exactly what it says. This is the style of learning where all teaching is done in a classroom with an in-person setting. This is what everyone usually envisons when they think of school and teaching.

Equal access to education is guaranteed with in-person learning. There is no worry that one student has the materials needed for learning while another does not. In-person teaching also allows for social interactions between teachers and students during learning, which leads to collaboration and socialization.

Traditional in-person education has its common drawbacks. One being the difficulty in differentiating among 25+ students during one lesson. In-person teaching does not allow teachers to spend as much quality one-on-one time with students who may need the extra attention. Following COVID-19, the transition to online teaching will also cause a lot of strife if there is a closure due to an emergency.

Distance learning is where students learn virtually through online classes. This can be done through various methods, such as Google Classroom, Canvas, Blackboard, etc. Students complete coursework online, and depending on the teacher, will attend virtual lectures and live classes.

There are many perks to distance learning for both teachers and students. For teachers, this allows them to focus on the needs of students and utilize one-on-one sessions to assist them with their needs. It also allows teachers more prep and planning time to effectively assign work and flexibly do class time lectures. Perks for students are the ability to work at their own pace during the day, increased breaks if needed, and less stress on "business hours" learning. They may also feel more comfortable seeking teacher help, considering it is one-on-one versus whole class.

The largest issue with distance learning is student engagement. Some students excel with this model and get all of their work done, while others fail to log in, fail to complete work, and attendance falls off greatly. Another issue with distance learning is the lack of access to materials (if not provided by the district). If students do not have a laptop or Chromebook, distance learning is impossible.

Blended learning is the balance between in-person learning and distance virtual learning. Students have a schedule where they come into school and attend lectures or complete work, and then on the other days they do their coursework virtually from home. There are two ways this can be done. One where teachers build a schedule where only some of their students in person learn while others are home, and then the students swap, and those at home come into school while the others are virtual.

There are many perks to blended learning. Teachers are given planning time between in-person classes to prepare for students' needs. There is more integrity in assessments since students are completing them in person rather than virtually with no supervision. Blended learning also allows for student and teacher interaction and socialization. Students also enjoy the flexibility in attending school in person and virtually.

Blended learning requires a lot of concentration and workload for a classroom teacher. They must work hard to balance the needs of students virtually learning as well as planning for in-person instruction and assessment. Another drawback is that not all students have access to the same technology that may be needed for blended learning.
