The skills allow students to understand the content more thoroughly. Strong lessons develop students' independence. Taking a realistic understanding, and not putting pressures on students. Not looking at students as being deficient... taking an honest stock. Don't stereotype. Being real with a student. "I know you struggle with this." Still make sure you are encouraging students, using the extra effort to help a student to get there. 

Not labeling students, but understanding who they are as a person.

Make an effort to get to know the student.
