I use a few read aloud books, such as What if Everybody Did That?, The Girl Who Never Makes Mistakes and Each Kindness, at the beginning of the year to initiate discussions with the class so that we can create a norm chart the first week of school. This sets our classroom rules and mission statement for the year. Every morning in school announcements the entire school (each class in its own room) joins in the school pledge-refecting these ideas:
We are a team!
We will give our best effort!
We are respectful learners and friends!

I start each year with a lot of read aloud stories and we do a lot of class discussions. I guide the students in developing a list together so the students can all feel a sense of ownership. This year our school became more involved in PBIS so as a whole school we worked together to develope school wide norms which has been great and very positive. We start each morning, during annoucements, reciting our school pledge: Responsible is how we act, we show respect and that's a fact. Be kind to others every day. Be your best self, its the Woburn Street way! I have a large copy of this pledge in our classroom.

But we, like others, build this together during the first few weeks in the classroom. My classroom is bee themed so these "rules" are posted in the classroom all year:

Bee Kind
Bee Respectful
Bee Responsible
Bee a Hard Worker
Bee a Good Listener

We discuss and make a big poster with examples of what each of these "rules" means and how we can do them. I draw pictures and label and leave the posters up for a while. We read books to support what each of these means too. I take out these big posters after vacations and whenever we need to revisit expected behaviors more specifically.

I start each year with a lot of read alouds about behaviors and getting along. We have a lot of class discussions about what we would like to have our classroom look, feel and sound like. Once we have discussed those topics, the students and I come up with a "Classroom Contract" and we come up with our classroom rules together. The kids usually say "don't" in their rules, so I typically ask if we can rephrase it so instead of "don't run in the classroom" we would say "walk in the classroom." When the contract is done, we all sign it agreeing to respect the contract.

This year we rolled out PBIS and have been adjusting to using common language. Next year. I plan to use the language from our PBIS model "Act Responsibly, Show Respect, Be Your Best Self, and Be Kind" to set up the classroom norms.

I don’t have a picture on hand, but here are the guidelines for discussions in my classroom:

When participating in classroom discussions:
I wait my turn to speak
I ask questions
I respond to others with my own thoughts and ideas
I stay on topic
I maintain a calm voice and body

Practice SLANT:
S- Sit up
L- Look at the person talking
A- Act like you care
N- Nod your head to show you are listening
T- Take turns while talking

I had some of the kids in graphics make up a number of posters and have plastered them around my room and constantly pointing to them throughout the academic week. I do this because math can be hard and I reject the argument "I'm not good at math". Instead, I want my kids to embrace the philosophy they are learning and need to take a chance, make a mistake, and get comfortable with the idea that searching for solutions, whether in math or life, can be messy.

Our school practices the Responsive Classroom approach and at the beginning of each school year the classroom creates their rules and norms for their classroom. We try to keep it direct and simple. Be respectful, help one another, be kind, listen to each, follow directions. Students then sign and accept these as the class norms. We have morning meetings each day and may use that time to check in and see if we all feel like we are using our norms or class rules. We use interactive modeling to show how to do a turn and talk. What does it look like, sound like and feel like? And we may need to revisit, model and practice how to effectively do these routines. I don’t have a picture of this. I also have a growth mindset bulletin board in my classroom which gives examples of changing your words to change your mindset. Instead of, I give up, you could say what other strategies can I try. We refer to it often.

Norms Chart
I came from a school that had practiced Responsive Classroom. At the beginning of the school year, the students compile their hopes and dreams for the year, take a picture of each child and post it up in our room. The space from day one is collaborative, filled with respect, and a safe space to make mistakes and learn from them. I teach them about growth mindset, we get to know each other, and come up with class rules together. I don't have a picture, but we have rules for class discussions and class rules. We practice models of gradual release, scaffold and enrich. Here is a close proximity of what we keep posted.

In our classroom we:
*Are bold, daring and take academic risks
*It is okay to try and fail because I will learn, grow and try again
*Participate in group discussions because what I think, notice and wonder is valued and makes an important contribution for all of us to learn from
*Can agree, disagree, add on to what others say, and ask questions to clarify and make meaning to learn
*Stay positive, polite, civil, respectful and kind
*Motivate, support, and help each other
*Give our best effort
*Stay on task and be productive

I always let my students know that it doesn't matter if their answer is the right answer; that I would rather see how they get an answer and if the answer is correct, that is just a "plus". If student's do not get the correct answer, they are asked to see if they can find their mistake and share it with me (and their classmates) if they are comfortable.

Something we implement in our class BEFORE sharing and discussions is "struggle time." In math students tend to shutdown at the first sign of something seeming difficult. More often than not before they'll even put a pencil to paper they'll want help from a teacher before even attempting the work. We have implemented struggle time because most of the time students do know what to do and how to do a problem they just have a fear of being wrong. After students have their "struggle time" then they can turn and talk about the problems at hand. If they don't attempt what is being done then they'll have nothing to bring to the dicussion.

Melissa Garfield's NormsAs the students enter my classroom space, there is a mirror and I encourage them to practice saying something positive about themselves when they enter. They giggle at first, but many students do say something positive and relevant to themselves automatically at this point. There is also a stick-figure poster that tells them that how to be a math person is simply being a person. These norms build on the idea that mistakes in our math room are expected, inspected, and respected and that we will work through them together to build on our knowledge.
