Zaphod is a character who seems to put on a showy front since he crashes the Earth party and has a boat with blades meant only for creating wakes. Zaphod also appears to be ambitious since he steals to ship to achieve his dream of reaching the planet building world.

In general, humans like you or I or Arthur Dent tend to expect robots to have a sunny if not neutral disposition. He is either really smart or really dumb, and he is charming and eccentric. "In one corner a robot sat humped, its gleaming brushed steel head hanging loosely between its gleaming brushed steel knees." Robots were expected to be helpful and enthusiastic to work for humans since that’s their purpose, but Marvin is different and that makes him interesting.

His smartness goes to waste.

He also seems to be very depressed and bored all the time since he needs much more bigger things to keep his mind off of things, which is why he tries to avoid talking about life, "Well, said Trillian in a bright compassionate tone, ’here's something to occupy you and keep your mind off things.’ ‘It won't work, ‘droned Marvin, ’I have an exceptionally large mind." Zaphod is also described as an individual that seeks approval because as the text mentioned that he preferred people to be “puzzled t=rather than contemptous”. It seems that he doesn’t like to be critizied.
