  •  Martin Luther King Jr. joins  a student sit in at a white only restaurant called Rich’s. 
  • MLK was arrested for not having a valid Georgia license (He had a Alabama license)
  • Presidential candidate JFK calls Coretta (MLK’s wife), to provide encouragement
  • While Robert Kennedy convinced the Dekalb County Judge to let him go 
  • MLK and 51 other protesters were arrested for trespassing
  • MLK was sentenced to four months in prison 
    • He had to do hard labor
  • He was release October 27, 1959

  • July 25,th 1959 Woolworth desegregated their lunch counters (6 months of sit-ins)
  • Sit-ins began in 13 states
  • CORE helped lead the sit-in movement

  • The Supreme Court (Cooper v. Aaron)  says that the threat of mob violence is not a good reason to delay desegregation of the school

  • This case relates to the Brown v. Board of Education because that case said to desegregate schools with “all deliberate speed”

  • The supreme court rules that segregation in public transportation that travel between states is unlawful and unconstitutional on December 5, 1959

  • This was partly due to the Freedom Riders who rode interstate buses down to the South to make sure the waiting rooms and buses were desegregated

  • The riders were attacked by white mobs and only reached Jackson Mississippi, instead of Louisiana which was their goal
