Describe the sources that historians have used to study Greek history. What are the limitations of these sources? How do modern historians overcome these limitations?

I chose question number two because it is interesting to know and understand how these historians are able to gather and understand the information to solidify a time period they were never in. Historians back in ancient Greek and new use literary sources, both fiction and non-fiction, and material culture, to reconstruct the stories of the Greek people (Williams 2017, 179). While archaeological evidence is used to fill the gaps in the literary evidence found by the historians. Historians back in their times would have to rely on the source that they found available to reconstruct the period where the characters lived. Historians would use sources that didn’t necessarily describe historical events for the period. Historians used these literary sources such as epics or stories that were told , lyric poetry, and drama to define those periods. The earliest of literary sources in Greek history were the Homeric epics, Iliad and Odyssey. It was difficult to decipher the epic because they came before the Greek alphabet (Williams 2017, 179).
Limitations historians have is the scarce sources that are available to put the puzzle or pieces together to understand what happened in those periods. One example is Sparta, the Spartans did not value the arts and letters as the Athenians did but rather valued military valor above else. The only literary sources from Sparta were two poets, Alcman and Tyrtaeus (Williams 2017, 180).
non-fiction literary sources that were found from Plato and Aristotle provided some type of insight into the political thoughts, moral values, and perceptions of the world (Williams 2017, 180).
Reading this I can barely understand how historians are able to put together certain events in time. Though I know it takes a great deal of time for the historians to gather the information necessary to define the outcome, they need a lot of information and understanding to unravel the truth of the past.
