William and Ellen Craft successfully escaped Robert Collins and with some help, avoided recapture from bounties. This can be connected to Huckleberry Finn because of the similarities in how peoples minds changed about slavery. Huck At the beginning, sees slaves as they were treated and by the end of the book believed Jim was a person just as much as anyone else. When William and Ellen in 1850 were nearly arrested after the fugitive slave act. The people in Boston who knew William and Ellen protected them and harasses the bounties till they left them alone. This being a great example of how some communities are moving forward when they decide to go against the norms they grew up and lived with to keep their new found friends safe.

Twain is trying to make a point on the treatment of slaves after the war. Showing us that it hasn't really changed much other than the slaves were free. The writer here expresses a distaste for the book, also discussing the characters such as Jim and Huck. Because of Morrison's experiences, being black she has more personalized feelings towards Jim and his relationship with Huck. I personally made limited connections to the book and did not feel involved with it due to my lack of experience with racism and my moral stand points.

A major point Saul William's makes is that current language is a poor representation of reality. I believe that in the time period of Huckleberry Finn, That the terminology they used such as the N-word was an accurate representation of the reality for slaves and other dark skinned races. This is because of how poorly they were treated and how they were viewed. However in todays language it is used like an accessory and misused whether its because of ignorance, arrogance, or straight up fun. The word does not represent where were are as a nation, or how we are trying to work away from racism.

The N-Word(McCan)

There are many controversies on the N-Word that are very personalized and historical. The use of the n-word is unnecessary from my opinion but people continue to use it in many ways such as to refer to their friends, to insult, and even used in comedy. People tend to poke and prod this term and make it more complex, where all you need do is look at the history of the word and get a mutual awareness of the things that come with the word. People making the statement that they are not using it in negative tone or are implying anything bad by it get away with its use and may not understand the baggage that comes with the word. The big question is about putting a restriction on language, and if that is in violation of the constitution. Books or novels such as Huck Finn hold historical significance but use the slang constantly, in the context of how it was used at this point in time. Though unnecessary, it was apart of their everyday vocabulary and teaches us where the word comes from along with how people used that word to make black people feel less than. Whereas today we use it to refer to friends in a non aggressive or direct way.

This is a strong representation of how race is dealt with, handled, and viewed. The term Systemic Racism is mentioned and seem to be the main focus of this article. Not knowing what this term means, you assume its a negative term. This assumption is accurate, a real and theoretical belief that the "United States was founded as a racist society." Based on research and claims, the belief furthers more into believing that racism is a large factor in all of our social functions. How Clinton uses this term is a great example of lack of knowledge on this topic and an example of a separation between races when you try to use protected language to appeal to your audience

Though we would like to think that we are past racism, we dismiss everyday events, such as mishandled traffic stops and arrest. These situations are difficult to deal with because racism may or may not be apart of it, but because of experience and discrimination affects, these actions get heated very quickly whether or not race was apart of it. Systemic racism in Maine is very real and from a white persons point of view may be unknown do to the ratio of blacks to whites. Hearing the opinions from black Maine residence shows us how difficult life even now is for them.

Why we can't talk about race as a nation? Our nation contains thousands upon thousands of people of all different races and religions along with many different ways race is treated. Growing up in Maine is a lot different than growing up in Carolina where the black race has larger numbers.Growing up in Maine I was unaware of racial issues until I was fifteen. Friends started making jokes that were unkind towards people of different races and I was beginning to understand that even as kids racism was a real occurring issue. Having friends from California they have different experiences where they were aware of racial indifferences at a younger age, and understood it better than I did with different views on the issue.

In 2015 down in Birmingham Alabama, fast food workers of both races fight to raise their devastatingly low minimum wage to $15 an hour. Being denied due to a party consisting of mostly white republicans who did not allow this law to pass. This is a good example of how we have not moved forward as a nation. When we are able to maintain equal pay and treatment for everyone even in those states where the ratio of whites to blacks is 97% to 3%. That is when we will be moving forward.
With all these little issues we continue to run in circles getting nowhere with race until we are able to respect and treat equally.

Today we are moving backwards as a nation or in circles. Black communities are coming together and standing their ground "like they always have" so they may maintain their equality and their rights. If we were truly moving forward they wouldn't be needing to fight for their freedom and natural rights that every human is born with. This may cause a larger divide between people and cause more chaos sending us further and further back.

A lot of the issue is that people don't know how to fix this problem so they ignore it. The news portrays very negative out looks on racial situations typically highlighting the black society in very negative context. Along with the lack of awareness of these privileges. In white high privilege societies the citizens are unaware of the impoverished communities or even ignore those less than because of the above reason that people don't know how to fix the issues in front of them. This leads to questions like, how do we fix this? how can we get people to stop ignoring and start acknowledging the situation and acting on a way to fix it.
