The father became obsessed with protecting his family and he pushed the trauma of his wife's death deep down. Water is necessary for life but it just so happens to also be the one thing that kills aliens. It represents how water can represent the fear of water as well, not just like spring, but how it can literally be the death of someone. The water could be a symbol for cleansing and pure so maybe that’s why it’s always left out by the daughter and it’s something that you wouldn’t expect to have a simple solution (like killing aliens) but it does as was shown in the clip provided. They are all fighting for there lives throughout the clips and living their lives, and what would normally kill a human, a hard swing of a bat, wouldn't kill an alien, but water does, just as water can kill humans (when in large quantity or extreme temperatures.)

After the mother's death, the father is said to have a loss of faith and can't find any purpose in life. The glasses of water his daughter leaves around the house would be seen as "half empty" during this time. However, once the aliens attack, the glasses of water suddenly become a valuable resource and might be seen as "half full" by the father. The fact that his daughter is the one that left the glasses around the house is no coincidence, either. During the course of the movie, the father finds renewed faith in the form of his family. Even though the one he loved is gone, he still has his family and therefore a purpose in life.

The overall theme would be the purpose of life and the personal faith that everyone should have even in the worst of situations. The water symbolizes the hope and faith. After the passing of the mother, there was a rough patch. The father didn't like the water sitting around the house thus symbolizing faith was lost. However the water saved them from the alien invasion. Faith was their savior. They had the faith to fight back.
