I remember that my trench was very narrow. She was one meter wide on two meters in height. What was small for so many soldiers. She was surmounted sand bags and by barbed wires. She was not comfortable and she was invaded by rat and lice . The horrible smell of corpses in decomposition floated in all the trench. In spite of the organisation of the trench, she was not completely without danger.

On this photo, there is 4 of my friends. They are called Pierre, Charles, Robert and Jacques. The only one Pierre and Charles had survived. Robert was killed hand to hand by an enemy and Jacques died during the bombardment in the Somme in 1917. When I had learnt their death I was very sad. But I had to continue to fight and I had to gain this war so that he can reposed in peace.

The first time when I had seen a tank, I was impressed by this new technology, by this "animal war" and I was extremely proud of the British. " But if he had this idea before, the war would be faster finished " that is what I said myself. I observed this machine with amazement !

I was told the war would be over by Christmas. What utter rubbish that was, We had lied to us! It dragged on for four miserable years. Four years to be fought, 4 years to live in the dirt, the hunger, the mug, and with the horrible smell of bodies in decomposition. When I learnt that we had signed the Armistice, it was the most beautiful day of my life! I was finally going to find my wife and my children! But I was also sad for the families which were not going to find her mans, their brothers or still their sons. I was alive and we had not been all unfortunately. Because actually everydays I fought without thinking in every of these deaths but they were very many! And I had understood him at the end, 9 million deaths it is enormous!
