Project 3: My Extended Inquiry Project

For my Inquiry Project I decided to question the harmful effects of climate change on our environment by researching key producers of pollution and finding background information on helpful corporations that can provide a way to prevent further damage! Looking back on this assignment i had a really great time doing the research and without even knowing it, I learned more than I thought I could about Climate Change and Global Warming; even more so than what I thought I already knew. My reasoning behind choosing this topic is a simple as this...Our generation is simply uneducated, now I don't mean to say that we are stupid I simply mean that we are so focused on getting to the top and living the American dream that we forget to stop and observe the complete destruction of the planet we inhabit. All of the pollution, destruction, extinction, etc. is caused completely by human nature and we justify these actions because we can make a quick buck from tearing down a forest, hunting an animal to extinction, or dumping toxins into a natural water source. We as a species owe it to all the other species co-inhabiting this planet including our future generations to stand up and protect it. THAT is the reason why I chose to do this topic for my inquiry project

For my EIP I at first did not really know what to do that would help educate others about my cause in an effective way. I had some ideas about websites or even making a presentation that I could post on the internet but, when I finally got down to it I thought, "How do I learn about things going on in life?" The answer I got was social media, so i decided to make a tumblr blog that I can use to interact with real life people and companies to get my message across and lasst but not least, have a way to continue getting my message out there even after this class is over. So, here I have posted a username to a tumblr blog I created as a base for a multi-modality presentation style for my EIP. For example, I have folowed accounts that are for fighting climate change, I have posted and republished articles, videos, and GIFs about climate change. The basis behind this is to use multiple forms of media in order to inform the population in inovative ways. FOLLOW ME @tolley1028-uwrt

The link was not working well so i posted the username in order to view the blog I created.

Here is a google map that I have created that involves companies and organizations that have been a part of my research whether through writing the articles I have found or being the actual companies that I have researched and I have represented all of that in the link below.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ZlZhhUn2Hd2-vmtXP8jWK3OW6m0&usp=sharing
I chose to use these companies in my google map not only because they are tied to some of the articles I have posted but also because after researching said companies I have found a lot of truth behind their missions. Each company that I have pinned on my map comes with a brief explanation of what they do and why they are important to my cause. For example, one of my companies is GreenPeace USA and the reason I chose them is because the way in which they approach the world is through a view of co-inhabitable. They see this world as a shared home for humans and every other species that lives with us. Not to mention the fact they also solely believe in preservation so that future generations may enjoy what we have and so much more.

For this part of the project we as a class were asked to write our version of an academic essay in whatever way we felt fit the description of what an academic essay is. The purpose of this part of the project is to see what we come up with and base it off of our teachings throughout the years in every English class we have ever been in and then totally break all of those rules. Not to deny that what we were taught is right but, the purpose is to explore new ways and ideas of expressing ourselves using abstract literary techniques. This part of the project was also to help each of us find a personal writing process that we can reuse whenever we choose in order to help us with essays and assignments in the future. Found below is a Word Document that contains my version of an academic essay with a topic of Climate Change that relates back to my EIP.

In individual groups of about four people we all grabbed a bunch of miscellaneous objects and created a machine to get a ping pong ball from one end of the table all the way to the other end. It was very exciting and honestly a great way to be introduced to the people around me!

So today in class Professor Cary asked us what we thought the deffinition of an acdemic essay was....? At first I thought it was like a trick question or something because it seemed to simple so I said that an academic essay is a written literary work on a topic that has been researched and is delivered in MLA format in atleast 5 paragraphs or more. Little did I actually know that he wanted to know our answers so that he could explain that this is not the only way in which we can express ourselves in an academic environment. He went on to explain that literature is all about expression so the fact that we are stuck to rules that confine us to being mundane and similar, it is arbitrary to believe we can ever be expressive in our own way.

Today in class we started to discuss our end of the year project or EIP which stands for extended inquiry project and then find out what we think this process will look like. I created a digram of steps that I thought explains the process of creating an EIP. First you need to choose a topic that interests you, then you need to ask a question regarding the topic, next do some research about the answer(s) to the question, and finally present all of your findings in any way seen fit. I don't really know what I am going to do for my EIP yet but hopefully it will come to me soon!
