In a colony there are three different types of bees. The three are, queen bee, worker bees, and the drone bee. A queen bee’s job in the hive is to repopulate. The worker bee’s job is to clean the hive, collecting pollen and nectar to feed the colony and they take care of the offspring. The drone bee’s only job is to mate with the queen bee. The three most common bees are Bumble Bees, Carpenter Bees, and Honeybees. Carpenter Bees are solitary bees. They build nests just for themselves and only feed their own young. Bumble Bees can sting more than once because their stingers are smooth and do not get caught in the skin when they fly away. They are also very social bees and live in large "families". Honey Bees can survive many years because they huddle together and eat honey during the winter. Although, they can only sting once because their stingers are barbed and tear off when they try to get away.

Stages of a Bees Life

The Stages of a bees Life includes four main stages; egg, larva, pupa, adult. In the egg stage, the honey bee queen lays an egg in a spotless cell, if the cell isn't clean the queen will not lay an egg. The queen bee positions the egg in an upright position at the bottom of a cell.

Each cell is a different size determining the kind of bee that it will produce. If the cell is standard worker-sized cell, she releases a fertilized egg into the cell, that will later produce into a worker bee (female). If the queen chooses a wider drone-size cell, the queen releases an unfertilized egg that will become a drone bee (male). Three days after the queen lays the egg, it hatches into a larva. In larva stage, it grows quickly, shedding their skin five times. In this stage, the larva consumes 1,300 meals a day, nurse bees feed the larva royal jelly, and later they feed then bee bread (honey and pollen). After five days, they are 1,570 times larger than their original size. At this time the worker bees seal the larvae in the cell with a porous capping of tan beeswax. Once sealed in, the larvae spin a cocoon around their bodies which then starts the pupa stage. In the pupa stage, the pupa is beginning to take on the familiar features of an adult bee. Eyes, legs, and wings take shape, and to end it all, the fine hairs that cover the bee’s body develop. After twelve days, the now adult bee chews her way through the wax capping.
